Why are most ammo holders seen in Africa open top style?

I have a couple versions….elastic open top and bottom and leather with closed bottom.

What is the reason most ammo holders on the belt are open top instead of one with flap closure? Is this a legacy of double rifles needing quick access to more ammo that has just continued with more modern rifles holding 4 or more rounds? Is there a real functional purpose to avoid a flap closure on a belt mounted ammo pouch for use in Africa?

Good points all. I believe the decision is just a matter of personal choice and what works effectively for YOU.
Personally, I settled many years ago on what I consider the best of both worlds...security... and ready unhindered access.
My ammo pouch is the belt worn, suede, bi-fold variety. It is snapped closed 90% of the time, unsnapped and dropped open as circumstances dictate. No top flap to hinder access in critical moments.

It's interesting to see how long one can talk about a topic like this.

Ultimately it's a matter of taste because the difference between both types of ammo holders is small when it comes to reloading quickly. The cartridges certainly seem to be within easy reach in an open holder, but it could also be that the cartridges are clamped more firmly in the loops so as not to get lost than it were the case with a closed holder. A short soft flap over a holder is on the other side not an obstacle to a quick access to the cartridges. I have hunted with both types of holders over the years and have never noticed a clear advantage when reloading quickly. I tend to lean towards a closed ammo holder in Africa for the reasons I mentioned in previous posts.

Homemade holder for the cartridge 10,75x68. I used it two times in Africa.
