Why fly domestic, you're a citizen?

I live in colorado and if time allows I always drive. I enjoy it.
For hunting and fishing most things are generally no more than 15 hours away. Texas, arizona.
But have driven to Oregon, Florida and the furthest NW Ontario at about 31 hours.
Only flights so far have been Alaska 3 times and Newfoundland for a moose hunt that would've taken 60 hours each way driving.

Why don't some drive? Because it's not fun anymore. There's too many crazies, doped up, drunk and distracted drivers on the road. I drove up Interstate 95 last Saturday night to do some crop damage deer hunting. My stomach was in a knot until I got off the exit. Coming home, a half a dozen motorcyles, a gang of some sort, went by me doing 80 (not telling anyone what I was doing except keeping up with traffic) weaving in and out of traffic that didn't have four car lengths in between and this is on five lanes. One hiccup and there would have been an accident shown on worldwide TV. It's not unusual to see someone on the same road doing 55 in the middle lane, texting. Nope, anymore driving is a chore and a dangerous one at that. YMMV.

It is all about Time.

My wife did a bear hunt on Vancouver Island in 2016. It was to be a 6 day hunt. At 1:30pm on the second day she shot an amazing black bear. The hunt was over. If we had flown, we would have been flying out the next day. However, we had driven up from Texas, and because we were teaching at the time and it was early June we spent the next 20 days driving and camping our way back to Texas.

I am doing a DIY black bear hunt on Prince of Wales Island the first week in June of this year. Currently I am retired. I have the time. I am going to spend 5 to 8
days camping and fishing my up to POW. I will catch the ferry in Bellingham, WA to Ketchikan, AK and then to POW. My sons on the other hand have real jobs and they are in the process of financing my elephant hunt. Therefore, they have to fly. I will meet them at the airport in Klawock, AK. We will camp, hunt, and fish for 8 days. I will then take them back to the airport. Hopefully, they will have boxes checked as luggage that contains frozen fish and bear meat.

I will drive back with coolers containing the rest of the meat and fish. I will take considerably less time driving back. My idea is not to freeze the meat but to keep it cold until I get it home and then freeze it. I will being using two high end roto-molded coolers and an ARB refrigerator.

My camping rig will look like this.

If you have the time, desire, and equipment, this is a great way to extend the adventure of your hunting trip. If you have a limited time frame, get on the airplane.

Go on the ADVENTURE regardless of how you can get there.(y)(y)(y)

Hope you are keeping up with the operating status of the Alaska Marine Highway System. Right now it isn’t operating. Major budget cuts and extreme lay up for maintenance schedules have resulted in only one short haul ferry operating and no long haul ferries currently in service. This is causing major hardship for all southeast AK. June is 3 months in the future, perhaps there will be service back in place by then.

Thank you for sharing with me about the current issues with the ferry system.

Yes, I am keeping any eye on this situation. Originally, the plan was to drive to Prince Rupert BC and take the Alaskan ferry to Ketchikan, AK. This would have been a cheaper route than going from Bellingham, WA. Unfortunately, there is a disagreement between the U. S. TSA that clears passengers onto the Alaskan ferry and the Canadian government about providing armed security. This disagreement has shut down this route for the foreseeable future. If the ferry system from Bellingham, WA to Ketchikan, AK is not working by May I will get on an airplane. It's part of the adventure. (y)(y)(y)

The 1985 movie "Out of Africa" has had a major impact on how Princess Bride and I have developed our camping styles. Our trips to Africa have just confirmed that one can travel into the bush and live in comfort.

Though we travel well into some very rugged country in North America, we have yet to live to the standards of Africa. Supper on the Kavango River.
