Wild Lion Hunt

Sorry I reread my post a bit confusing, Thromahlen and Cochran acquired the concession so Johnny and Earnest backed out but will run the hunts they already have booked there.
Thanks for the clarification. So what company and what PH would be conducting your safari?

What is the success fee if the lion is taken in each area?
I think you'd be better served reaching out to D&Y via email, WhatsApp, or a PM to discuss a potential Lion Hunt and trophy fees associated with it.

Since others have asked I’m just repeating the question. I’m sure several on here would be interested.

@Philip Glass took a beautiful hard earned lion with D&Y. I would PM him for details. As I have hunted with D&Y I just want to provide three facts based on my experience:
1. They are an awesome great outfitter who I both enjoyed and respect greatly!!!
2. They are a great value in truly wild Zim.
3. I was there for 10 days with a lion pride not 300 yards to our camp roaring each night!!!

Rockwall205, you’d do well to think long & hard, and ask pointed questions, about WHY they’re discounting the one and only lion on quota. It makes absolutely no sense.

Next time you’re at the store, you might purchase some lube. You may need it. My .02 worth.

Good morning 375fox I see you bring the issue of omay quite frequently. I am not sure of your full name and you have probably never hunted with us as you have very little knowledge of how things transpired . Unfortunately the leasing of these areas is a lot more complex than one might think. The omay is in hand until 2028 , chewore unfortunately through the current lease holder who is a foreign investor which we have the hunting rights with is wanting to change the chewore south into a photographic area which is to his discretion. We have secured the hunting rights to Nyakasanga and this has compensated for the loss of the quota from chewore . Anyone who has hunted with us will know that we will always make the hunt happen even if it comes to us having to sacrifice our own funds to match prices as quoted . Again unfortunately there are more than just us who have had concessions being lost to bigger fish . This is a constant battle which is sad but the way it goes. So please in future if you are going to call on our reliability or consistency in our areas use knowledgeable resources and not hear say .

On the presumption of the pricing on a lion hunt . Our prices are adjudicated according the chances of success and area . The omay has preduced great lions for the last 3 years , we don’t have the populations of lion like bvc, save , Matetsi or nyakasanga hence why they charge at a premium. Omay is an area of incredible opportunity to shoot the big 6 in one place and gives you a chance at a great lion with a lot of hard work and perseverance it is very possible .

Sorry for the long msg but just wanted to clear up some of the mentions in this thread before there are assumptions of our operations

Thank you
Dalton
I should add I find it interesting you only called out my response but not your clients posting what you say are incorrect rates as “Fact!” that led to this discussion. I’ve also made no attempt to provide details of your previous contract issues in Omay. I don’t have the details of what occurred or really care. Those attempted details have been provided by your clients. I only know it was a problem and a number of hunters who didn’t ask how long you held rights to the concession under the current contract were caught in the uncertainty. This thread was the first time I’ve ever mentioned it, but I can start bringing it up frequently if you accuse me of it? I don’t appreciate the accusations when all posts are public. I should say also I made an incorrect word choice earlier when I said “stable” I should have said “longer established.”

I've talked to @Philip Glass about his hunt, with him at his ranch. I've also looked into hunting with @DALTON & YORK SAFARIS myself, and heard great things from one of my Zim PH's (Dean) who apprenticed together with York. I believe he still occasionally freelances for D&Y if they need an extra PH since they're all still good friends.

My comment was more along the lines of suggesting the price discussion happen 1 on 1 vs on an open public forum. Lion hunting can be a controversial topic, even among lifelong hunters. As several have members have seen, their social media and internet activity can get reposted/trolled by anti-hunters. This is especially true when Lions/Elephants are involved. It's one thing to post day rates, but another to post trophy fees. Even D&Y don't post their trophy fees on their own website. They instead opt to post "upon request". Posting prices about a Wild Lion Hunt is a bit different than posting a special or package on a game ranch in South Africa or Namibia.

Scott,
I think the comment about Niassa and all lions being approved from there by USFWS has to do with all the data and research each of the concession holders in Niassa have. Lots of outfitters offer hunts there but they can borrow/lean on the concession holder and their data.

I haven't heard the same thing about Zambia and all lions being approved. I've been told that Zambia offers one of the best chances at a Lion being approved. I think the grey area is anytime you add in a new area or a new quota, especially in a smaller area like you notate Nkala is. Like you recommend Conservation Force is likely the best person to ask and I sincerely wish @Rockwall205 gets a positive assurance from them to go with this amazingly affordable opportunity at a wild lion.
I spoke with Conservation Force this morning they said should be no problem, they have cleared areas before that had been newly opened. She said that she would look into Nkala for me specifically. Worst case I shoot a buff / hippo or two for bait and add a couple of area specific PG .

Dawie Kemp would PH the hunt he is available in October and either T & C or JVC Safaris would be the company.

Nothing ventured nothing gained! Life is about taking a little risk every once in a while. I wouldn’t be in a position to consider a hunt like this if I hadn’t.

You might consider reaching out to a few other PHs and see their recommended times for a lion hunt. I’m surprised they’d suggest October. The baits rot faster and game is more concentrated to water making cats more difficult to bait. Usually cat hunts are done when grass is high and still relatively cool. I’d also make sure they reserve enough quota for you for bait that late in season.

HAVE NOT DONE A LION HUNT WITH THEM, BUT HAVE DONE A HANDFUL OF HUNTS BOTH DG AND PLAINS GAME WITH THORMAHLEN AND COCHRAN AND THEY WERE ALWAYS WELL RUN AND SUCCESSFUL HUNTS.

I spoke with a Tanzanian PH earlier today who said similar. There is a window in July as well but Dawie would not be available. Food for thought .

One of the questions posted was about success rates on wild lions.
I have limited experience, but from what I was told, lion's are about 50% success unless a lot of prebaiting is done and you are hunting in a "lion rich" area.
Some outfitters will have 3 lions on quota and sell 3 to 5 hunte knowing that one of more will be unsucessful. I am not naming names and will not but it does happen.

Further, for lion, if you have enought days, you increase your odds. If I did it again outside of Bubye and a couple of other lion rich areas, I would plan for 21 days minimum with an extention to 28 days on the table.

Lion is not easy and not high success rate. It is a thrill but very demanding.

@Rockwall205, hope this lion hunt works out for you and you get to take the lion of your dreams and we all get to read about it here on the forum.
Well that’s a lot of pressure ! Not very eloquent. Would give you guys a good laugh or two for sure!

Also, there are no bargains on lion hunts. If you offered one, there is a reason - low chance of success or too few days. Be careful and go in with your eyes wide open.

@Rockwall205 is a very experienced Africa hunter having taken many outstanding trophies. May I say very nice job AH members giving him caution for what may be a great value

You can say that, but a lot of these guys know that I got the proverbial shaft in Zambia 2 years ago. I think everyone just wants to make sure it’s not a repeat situation.
