A couple of weeks ago I won a bid on gun broker and have acquired a Winchester 30-06 made in 1972, it went for 1.00 under what I was willing to spend on it, now I have to figure out what ring height to put on it and a scope for it,was thinking Talley quick release rings and a scope in the 2-7x range, any words of wisdom and advice?

It really depends if it has iron sights or not and the size of the objective lens of whatever scope you chose. 40mm and under you are likely safe with medium height rings. Also factor in the height of the bases. Also depending on the scope you may or may not have to remove the rear sight.

Ye, it has sights, I was thinking medium height with a 32mm objective size,

For a scope,it's been a long time since I looked through a 32mm objective. I personally prefer a 40mm one

I like your choice of scope size and mounting system! Medium height rings should be perfect.

You can’t go wrong with a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36. Likewise the Leopold 2,5-8 is a lovely scope on a stalking rifle.

For ring height ...
Once you figure out what scope give Talley call they will happily help

Good info, it’s funny though, I have Talley rings and bases on a couple of other rifles, I always just made a WAG (wild ass guess) on height, and until this moment never even thought of calling Talley, awesome suggestion, thanks

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
