Hello, my name is Grant Taylor Soileau, I was born and raised in Texas and am inquiring on any and all work related to hunting in Africa. I guide hunts in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico and I would love nothing more than to branch out to Africa. Job history consists mainly of farming, ranching, construction, project management, big game, waterfowl, and upland bird hunting guide along with inshore and offshore fishing. I know and understand that it will be a quite a stretch for me to obtain this but I would not forgive myself if I did not try to make it happen. I know nothing of how to hunt for the jobs I am looking for, so, any help to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Grant Soileau

Greetings Gtsoileau
(Grant Soileau),

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I am not sure where to direct you on looking for Hunting Guide / PH work in any African country.
But my best guess is that you might try contacting each country’s Professional Hunters licensing organization.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog

Hello and good luck Grant. Have hunted in Africa before?

Hello and good luck Grant. Have hunted in Africa before?
No sir, being a hunting guide in North America has, for lack of better term, limited my financial well being so I cannot afford to hunt in Africa, so I figured I would attempt to find work there and see where it leads me.

It’s a bit short notice, but if you have the time and means to make it happen, attending the SCI convention next week in Nashville would be a good thing. You’ll have as many African hunting outfitters in one place at the same time as you’ll ever have. You could spend your time meeting the outfitters face to face and discussing your goals.

Welcome to AH!

Welcome to AH.
This is a second for attending the SCI convention. Great place to meet outfitters.

I spoke at length with my PH, he was one of the younger PH’s in camp.
In his case, he had to have his own truck, outfitted with Safari racks and the works.
He had to have his own rifle and he had a loaner or one for rent.
He was guiding plains only.
During Covid he did come to the US and work on farms in the mid west.
Previous to that he worked as a farm hand, a cull Hunter and a PH. Mostly culled crop raiding monkeys. Covid hit and he was unemployed.

Love the initiative! Good on you Grant.
Best of luck

Anyone can be licensed as a PH isn South Africa but you have to attend a course and pass a test.
It's for plains game only and for dangerous game you need verifiable experience and a number of dangerous game hunts as an apprentice.
Most other countries you have to be a resident or citizen.

Grant,

One other thing I should’ve thought about sooner is that you will not be able to PH (if that’s your goal) in some of the African countries. An example of that would be Zimbabwe, only residents can be licensed PHs there.

But I think if I were you I’d start with a phone call to @Bullet Safaris. Nathan Askew is an American and runs his own outfit in Tanzania. He’s a nice gent and perhaps is even looking for help but hopefully can at least give you some good advice. A Google search on Bullet Safaris will get you started on contacting him. I’d have to guess he is here in the USA now for show season.

Reza Call me any time you want to talk about Elephant. hunting and CMS.
I've hunted two Elephant with CMS.
In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
