Would you shoot this bull?

Hi guys,

A couple of days ago I had the privilege to lay eyes on this majestic bull. A true old warrior. Both horns broken off at the same point and an incredible body size and neck (the pictures don't do him justice).

To me this is an incredible bull and the trophy of a lifetime. I have seen many impressive kudu bulls over the years, but never anything with this much character. I can always hunt a "normal bull" but a trophy like this is hard to come by again.

I have some clients coming next week that might hunt him if they see him, but a part of me hopes they don't so that I can try and pursue him.

This is on a low-fence free range property where all the neighbouring farms shoot a lot of kudu for their tables, so for a bull to get to THIS age is very impressive.

I bet he has some stories to tell!

What do you guys say? Would you pull the trigger on this bull? And if yes, would you euro or shoulder mount him?

I would shoulder mount him to preserve the impressive cape as well!

No! Character kudu bulls IMO are not in the same shooter class as character buffalo bulls.

I don't think that I would shoot it, because I only keep the skulls for European mounts and so that in this case, nothing would be said about the game in itself. As a shoulder mount, such a trophy would certainly present itself very well.

My favorite thing on this Mule Deer was his saggy jowls, Roman nose and scarred up face. He was past his prime. He wouldn’t score well but he was still 30 inches wide.

It would make an interesting skull mount. Then save the cape, if it's any good, for a nice rack. For whatever reason, it seems difficult to find kudu with a good cape.

100% yes. What a warrior. I saw a big kudu on a high fenced place in Namibia one year with one horn broken off but he was nothing compared to this one above. Look at the neck on that brute! He's probably still winning battles. despite his broken horns.

More proof of my preference for age. My buddy and I were on a moose drop camp hunt. He shot an ancient 15ish yr old bull. I was jealous.

Then I shot a bull in its prime. I preferred his bull and he preferred mine. His was 63” no points, saggy beams and 4” thick front palms

I'd gladly shoot him at cull pricing and do a euro mount. Trophy pricing, no. The PH or landowner can retain the cape for their use.

I’d have no interest paying a trophy fee on that bull. Kudu are a common species. I’ve passed other big broken horn bulls.

Not likely because I already have 2… So, I would not set out to hunt it. If I were hunting and the opportunity presented, I’d have to give it some thought. Definitely not for my first Kudu, because I love the way they look intact with full curls and especially at 55+ plus…

Yes, to hunt an old boy that’s wary and worn usually makes for a more challenging hunt. It’s about the experience, not the inches in my world. Plus the fee would be commensurate to the trophy and a great additional stalk opportunity to an already ongoing safari.

If I had the option of only mounting one animal on the wall; it would definitely be a kudu. And, if I had the wall space, I would shoulder mount every kudu I hunted.

Agreed…I’d do the same as a cull, except just a few pictures, donate the hide & skull.

Looks to me like his tips are worn round, and the rest of the horns are smooth even the spiraling ridge is smooth. So for me that makes him a trophy.

Absolutely!!!
I don’t trophy hunt anymore, but in my book, a true trophy should be past his prime and no longer breeding.
I love the thick necks that the bulls get at this time of the year.
