Zimbabwe collared Elephant

An investigation will ensue, if , what, who knows.
If there is nothing illegal there is zero basis to confiscate the trophies.
But appearances will be kept up.

Soooooooo, I've read this thread a couple times, and still have no idea what the point of it is. One person is mad, because Martin didn't disclose the fact that the elephant was collared in his earlier post. Does it make a difference? Should all the outfitters state with each trophy they share on here whether it was free range, high fence, low fence, over bait, with hounds etc? From what I read here, the hunt was conducted within the law, but the government is now bowing to outside influences.
Am I missing something?

Read this carefully. Regardless of what we think, evidently the ZPHGA thinks this is a big deal.

OFFICIAL ZPHGA STATEMENT ON SECOND COLLARED ELEPHANT

It is with deep regret that ZPHGA acknowledge the death of collared elephant of significance, which has recently shot by hunters in an area adjacent to Gonarezhou National Park.

Although the hunt was conducted totally legally, the Professional Hunter conducting the hunt was aware of collared elephant bulls in the region. Any ethical Professional Hunter should have first ensured 100% that such a large tusker was not in fact collared.

It must be noted that this particular Professional Hunter is not a current member of ZPHGA and unfortunately due to the National Ethics Code of Conduct Policy not officially being implemented or enforced, there is no legal action that can be taken against this Professional Hunter concerned at this present time.

The client cannot in any way be responsible for any wrong doing, as he was only following the Professional Hunter’s instructions and had purchased a legal hunt, which was accompanied by a National Parks Ranger, who should also have verified that the bull was not collared.

Once again we urge National Parks and government to officially implement and effectively enforce the National Ethics Code of Conduct Policy, as this will hopefully stamp out the unethical and unsustainable hunting practices.

At present National Parks is handling this case as the appropriate authority, pending further investigations.

In closing, we have previously warned our members to take heed of their actions and the consequences involved. They should be proactive in engaging with each other and the appropriate third parties, to avoid this unfortunate outcome in the future once again.

Yours sincerely

I'd love to read this. Did a quick search and haven't found it yet.

Too bad no one around here is good at that kind of stuff.

Those who follow the "if it's legal we can do whatever the hell we damn well please" policy might want to pay really close attention to this situation....

Cause sometimes that's how stuff becomes illegal. And it sounds like ZPHGA might just be supportive of making a collared elephant illegal.

I just received my copy of Safari Times (SCI) today, has a nice column from Paul about joining this site as a member. They apparently have a focus on keeping up front and current with issues concerning hunters. Even though at least one of the hunters may not be a member of SCI, this issue is exactly what they should be on top of, especially since they have had at least a month to have a response ready. Come out for it, or say its unethical, but say SOMETHING! Personally, I feel as long as the hunt itself was conducted ethically, in a hunting area with a permit, and the collar did not aid in tracking the animal, it is an ethical hunt. Our P.H.'s must also be upfront before we book the hunt if they feel it is unethical to shoot a collared animal, with possible repercussions toward the P.H. and possible confiscation of the trophy.

Mr. Rosenfels sure has changed his tune since March 1.....

Why does a collar put on an animal for research purposes make it unethical to shoot?

Not published anywhere I can find in Zimbabwe.

That makes me feel better. :D

I wonder if it's a real and already written document, or something that has just been proposed somewhere ?

Where is a ZPHGA member willing to answer questions when ya need one!

While the copy and paste effect is great, would really like to see the actual site anything comes from, to check authenticity, while the memo posted above shows a few things it is also spelt out like some of the emails i get asking for my bank information because Prince whatever has $10m US dollars for me to manage
Did find this though, while some of it is interesting, i didn't read each word, just browsed and didn't see anything about collars or ethics/lack thereof

Hey Dobber

PM me your email address and I can send you the doc I received.

When I tried to put it into the thread, I wasn't savvy enough to make it work...so I just did a copy/paste on the body...didn't capture the ZPHGA logo.

.........,

There ar plenty of members of the ZPHGA on here.
I’d suggest an email to the author of the letter and see if he would share it with you.

They probably don't want to get involved in a 100 post thread arguing the difference in policy and law!

We could easily ask a hundred similar questions, regarding other things that are in dispute.

Folks get together and decide something is unethical...and if they are particularly influential, this same thing could even become illegal.

Now, if I am a member of the body (and governed by that body) that deems X to be unethical, then I need to tow the line or disassociate myself. Otherwise I risk punishment.

You are absolutely correct. Or the people who directly support that group (hunters) can get on the same page and tell them that we will boycott their members until they have a change of policy. Bet it wouldn't take long for them to reconsider.

............. the difference in policy and law!

I think that line might have just been blurred when Tusks were allegedly confiscated from a legal hunt.

And I feel like there will be less members in the ZPHGA in the future if they are determining what is ethical...I feel like South Africa had some type of ethical issue that caused some members to drop, but I can't remember what it was.

That's my point, if law had not been violated, the tusks couldn't be confiscated. A violation of policy may get you fired or suspended from a job, but not put in jail. This is why this entire thread is so hard to understand. Of course that is based on U.S. law. And I have no idea what Zimbabwe law says.
