2024 Deer Season

Not massive but a buck we were managing. 308 dropped him

Just glad to be on the board. Been a frustrating season so far. Shot this doe while still hunting through some thick stuff. View attachment 651833View attachment 651834
Nothing like getting a whitetail deer while stalking--not as easy as African PG, that's for sure. Neat pack out BTW. The first deer I ever shot was so far back in (and I didn't have a pack on me) that I boned it out, and wrapped the meat up in the hide, cutting two hand holds so I could carry it like a suitcase.

I bet your arms were tired. Haha

Thanks. Stalking is my favorite way to hunt deer.

It isn’t a long pack out. Less than a half mile. But this spot is thick and really broken. My brother and I dragged one out of the same area and that was enough for me to decide to quarter them for now on.

@chuckwellington - how long is that rifle? Or is it the photo angle? Looks like you got every ounce of meat off that deer——good job butchering !!!

It’s got a can. It’s only a 20inch barrel but with a suppressor it’s almost unwieldy. I’ve learned to maneuver it but I wish it was shorter. Sometimes wonder if I’d be better unmuffled.

Why use one at all hunting deer?

@chuckwellington - agree, I think suppressors on big game rifles are pointless and popular now due to marketing and TV hunting shows. Those that like to not wear hearing protection claim suppressors allow that but some suppressors don’t reduce noise from rifles below safe levels. Also, that Doe looks like a 6 month fawn and might be small enough to make the rifle look Big? That deer will be some very fine eating…congratulations

In my experience, suppressors improve field accuracy on long range specialty rigs. I have a banish backcountry on my Coues rifle, a custom 6.5 PRC made for cross-canyon shots at small targets. I can’t see much use for one in normal applications.

A suppressor can solve a number of different "problems" IMO... its not just about making a rifle "hearing safe"...

Ive got a little Rem 600 in 308 thats got a very light synthetic stock on it... adding a short (5.5") can on the end of it helped to tame recoil considerably... As a "blind" rifle, having the noise and concussion from a short barreled rifle being shot from an enclosed wooden box reduced has been really nice as well.. and, since its a very small rifle to begin with (18.5" barrel and 37" OAL), adding 5.5" to the end of it really sorta brought it to "normal" rifle dimensions, hasnt made it unwieldy in any way, etc..

Not that a 18" Rem 600 is a "long distance" gun in any way.. but adding the can improved accuracy as well.. I went from shooting roughly 1.1" groups with a hand load that I used in all of my 308's, to about .85" groups with the same load when the can is attached.. doesnt really make a difference at the distance this particular rifle is typically used (200 yards or less).. but.. its still a reasonable improvement that I enjoy and gleefully accept..

My girlfriend’s first deer and big game animal. We practiced a bit this summer and she did awesome. We sat for two days and javalinas busted out hunts. Last morning javalinas came in to the feed but this buck cam running down the road puffed up. Not wanting to engage with a pack of javalinas he stayed to the side.

Big sagging neck and a nice chocolate 8 it was a no brainer. It was the first buck we had seen all trip.
I was shaking like a leaf so nervous for her. She shot
It right In the heart on an awesome quartering away shot. Nice little blood trial to add to the fun and he was dead 30 yards in the mesquite

16 inch Supressed .308 with cheap federal blue box 150 grainers is slowly becoming my favorite deer combo for coastal south Texas hunting

He had a nice battle scar on his side from seasons past. 6 year old deer based on tooth wear for the area

Because I “can”. *bah dum tis*

In all seriousness, it’s not much use for this rifle’s purposes except for noise I suppose. I used to like being suppressed but now I’m more 50/50. I’m usually stalking close quarters or backpacking. Neither of which is conducive to this type of suppressor. I’ll probably switch back to my lever gun for the rest of the season. So it’s kind of moot.

For comparison, that rifle is basically the same length as my CZ 550 in .375H&H. Not as well balanced obviously.

Reza Call me any time you want to talk about Elephant. hunting and CMS.
I've hunted two Elephant with CMS.
In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
