My affinity for classic cartridges recently led me to a beautiful pre 64 (1952) model 70 in 300 H&H. The price was very good and since It came with a Leupold 3x9 scope and a set of RCBS dies, it was too good a deal to pass up. The rifle is in terrific condition and seems to have seen little use. The stock was cut but I was able to replace it with an original I picked up.

Despite the flyer, I was very happy with the rifle’s accuracy using 180gr Nosler accubonds. Excellent group for a 73 year old rifle!

I worked up some rounds with IMR 4350 and some 165gr Hornady interlock I had on hand and will try them out tomorrow to sight in and get a better feel for the rifle.

Any suggestions on a good hunting round— Bullet and powder? What’s your favorite for this classic rifle and cartridge combo? Planning to use it out west for mulies and antelope at some point but also may use it for plains game and for Stag.

Lucky dog! For that I would say 180 grain something depending if you want cup and core or monometal.

Fabulous cartridge in a perfect rifle to chamber it. Congratulations on a wonderful find.

Mine is a somewhat embellished Ruger No. 1. Just the ticket for a BC mule deer.

The .300 H&H is everything that the Win Mag claims to be, with just a bit more sophistication and class. Chamber it in a pre-64 and assume the ultimate look of haughtiness. Congrats again.
tricked out Ruger No. 1

I’d say there is nothing wrong with using those [emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]gr accubonds for mule deer or pronghorn. I shoot Nosler Trophy Grade factory ammo with [emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]grain accubonds in my .[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]] win mag and they do great on deer and elk

What would be more classic than a 180 grain round nose? Maybe @Doug3006 will chime in here with a recomendation.
I like round nosed bullets. The only thing better than a 180 gr RN would be the 200 or 220 grain!

I have a Model 70 in 375 H&H that shoots 300 grain Hornady RN Interlocks into varmint rifle sized groups. Absolutely devastating on any and all plains game. Of course, Hornady discontinued it. I suppose, so they could focus their energies on creating the slew of “Precision” bullets they’ve developed. Humph!

If you want to push the limits with this round, then Reloder-26 (assuming you can find some) is the powder to go to. You can push a 200gr bullet close to 2900ft/s. I've got a load with a 200gr TSX that groups 0.5 MOA at that velocity.

My go-to, because I have lots of them, is a 180gr Partition running running right on 3000ft/s. Used 200gr Accubonds as my standard load for years until they became unobtanium in SA.

I have found that flat base bullets seem more accurate in my rifle. Could be operator incompetence in either the reloading or the shooting. But that's been my experience.
I've tried lots of different powders so happy to share my experiences if helpful.

Flat base bullets are generally easier to make shoot at shorter ranges. The BT really isn’t a boost until you’re out there quite a ways.

Nosler 180 grain accubonds are very accurate in my 1957 m-70. They chronograph at 2850-2880. I have found reloads at that velocity are accurate but groups open up at higher velocity. Also, I have found the Barnes 165 grain TSX to be accurate at 2950 with H4831SC. Barnes has this load published online.

I found a really nice one built using a 1917 Enfield. Price is good but I am having a hard time getting beyond the price of ammo. That and I have a .308 Norma Mag.

Thanks all. I just picked up a box of 180 accubonds and a pound of H4831SC. The rifle really liked the factory accubonds so I’ll work some up tomorrow. I saw some 168 TSX at the shop—I’ve read nothing but good things about them and may try them next.

The factory recommendation is to crimp the 168 TTSX on the ogive for sufficient tension to achieve correct pressure. That is why I went to the 165 TSX. I just did not want the hassle. Call me lazy. Good luck.
