Best Advice To Sellers!

I want to see a fair price from an established member. If an item is posted with a high price and there are 10 price reductions or TTT posts I’ll generally ignore it regardless the price it goes to. Deal fair with me from the start and I’ll deal fair with you.

^^^this^^^. Best advice to sellers, don't be this^^^.

Amazes me that anyone could be stupid enough to respond to one of these assholes, but it only takes 1 response for every 10000 posts to keep them in business. The fact they are still rolling along tells me there are some really stupid people out there....

For this I posted my now famous bunch of banannas with a recent newspaper clearly showing the date.
Otherwise, a card with your name and date in it shows the sale items are not from a copied Internet photo.

The photo with a card and date continues to get mentioned or asked for. It’s unfortunately outdated because photoshop is easy to use. It’s been done by scammers in posts here. Nothing replaces a phone call if a seller won’t take one I won’t do business with them.

I have 301 transactions on another website/forum. For sellers, full disclosure, multiple photos and if so, ones that show the warts, and provide a phone number. Do not leave out pertinent or important information.
For buyers: #1. Educate oneself about the product. Verify any feedback, call the seller, especially high dollar items.

A lot of really good points on here. I'm trying to come up with something better but not happening. I've had some luck selling on here even as a newer member.

I think being established helps, I saw a mention of having some history and not just welcome messages. It can be tough to build that though.

I think communication is key. My last sale of that Rigby rifle, it got really dumb with shipping since the UPS closures of the customer centers. The FFL I used wasn't quite as slick with shipping as I thought he would be lol. It was a giant pain in the butt but I just tried to keep the buyer up to date on everything I knew and eventually it got there.

For sellers, I'd add asking the buyers which shipping is more reliable in their area.

Item 2: not everything is one size fits all.

Where I live in Alaska the USPS is your most reliable, least expensive option. UPS is getting better but takes a lot longer and is more expensive. FedEx is a rumor.

Virtually everything I do is online - GunBroker, Amazon, and eBay are the biggest. I try hard to target interactions that ship USPS.

Yep. Try as we may, many our lesser 49 brethren have difficulty comprehending. Really blows their mind when you tell them that the FEDEX goes to the post office in Anchorage and they put in the mail. Talk about a tracking nightmare.

Oh well.

And UPS "delivered" on tracking means it's in Anchorage and likely 7-10 days from actually being delivered. If the weather is good.

I agree on the USPS thing but got a hard lesson on "NOT" using their ground advantage service. I shipped an item up that way to a member here using that service as it was very cheap for the size of the package. Things went south starting with my local post lady not doing her job correctly and scanning the item when she picked it up off my porch, so it showed label created status for about 15 days before getting a scan in Idaho. From there it took another nearly 15 I think to arrive in Anchorage with no other scans until then.

Talk about nerve racking. I gave the guy his money back until it arrived as it was a larger purchase, and we were both losing faith that it was going to arrive. Needless to say, if I do it again its going on the plane with Priority Mail service.

Ground Advantage gets loaded into a container then put on a barge.

It was terrible all around. Two weeks just to travel from Texas to Idaho. Add on to that the scanning and tracking mishap of it not even showing I shipped it at all, and it made my mind up to just plan on using Priority from now on if shipping up there. At least if the tracking gets sketchy it should arrive within a week lessening tensions.

At the month that package took It felt like I could have done like Forrest Gump and walked it to him in less time than that.

Priority is no prize either. I sent a check for payment from VA to TX, was originally tracked to arrive in two days but ended up taking over a week. Yes, you have tracking but there were days when there was no update on the tracking, just "In Transit." I will probably now use FedEx for that type of delivery in the future.

It’s sort of a myth. “Yes, 70% of priority mail arrives within 3 business days sayeth the post office”. But their committed delivery is not violated until after TEN BUSINESS DAYS. You cannot even issue a trace on it until that time. Throw in a few holidays and that could be three weeks missing before they even will take your request to search for it.

One of the worst government agencies is the post office. For a Republican oriented group on AH I’m surprised to see all the defense of the most inefficient, mismanaged, and insolvent of government agencies. (Unless you live in Alaska where mail is subsidized at 1:10th the fair market value of the service)

Now show us on the doll where the bad postman touched you.

Everything is subsidized in Alaska. Welfare state. Not enough people here to think otherwise. The Feds hold 62% of the property here and aren’t letting it go so the tax base is very limited. We have the military bases and the oil, some very consumptive fishing practices that feather the nests of other outside companies, but mostly we just consume taxes. We spend millions in blood money to villages and their corporations to keep the people there and from moving into civilization. Oh yes we are also the environmental conscious for the lower 48.

The view is nice though.

The responses are valuable.
I always want to speak on the phone with the buyer. Have done this for 3 sales of DG rifles on AH. We can work out timing and details. In two cases, I wanted to speak directly to the buyer about particulars and f the rifle. I clearly stated in the ad that the CZ 550 . 500 Jeffery had an issue feeding the second round, and the Sabatti double had experienced a broken pin in the trigger mechanism, repaired. This was stated in the ads, but once buyers committed to the purchase, I spoke with each directly with all details, to have an opportunity to back out if the choose to.
I just don’t want to have a buyer not fully informed, and be confident with the purchase. Especially in the case of the.500 Jeffery buyer taking it for Cape Buffalo. He told me he could getting it feeding properly by qualified gunsmith. He took a nice buff, had to fire a second shot in a charge and dropped the buff. Hunt report is here. Good to know when selling a critical tool to someone engaging in a dangerous activity, it worked.
When speaking on the phone with buyers, usually an hour conversation talking all things Africa, hunting, rifles solidified the transaction.

@cajunchefray I totally agree with you. Beyond avoiding buying the wrong thing, or getting defrauded, I don't understand why more people don't call in general. We have a VERY small community of like-minded people on this forum that drink the same drinks, vote the same votes, volunteer at the same charities, hunt the same stuff, like the same clothes, and largely have the same sense of humor. Why wouldn't you want to talk to more people like that?

Some of the best experiences of the past 15 years have been through a phone contact on this forum asking about buying/selling a nothing-widget. Whether anything was bought or sold, countless times its led to people coming for a visit, meeting up for a hunt. or getting a long-distance friend that sends a Christmas card.

It's this tight-knit fabric of our obscure specialty hunting group that isn't just personally rewarding, but it all but guarantees square dealing. Bad people don't last long in tight knit communities as they burn bridges and have to move on to other pastimes and "fresh meat" just like multi-level marketers do.

Bottom line, pick up the phone, say hello to members whenever you can.

Exceedingly well stated sir.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
