CLIENT: Jason Edens Client Beware

From Jaco via FB messenger:

Phil could you help I am unable to reply or add to my post Jason Edens.

Could you post below on my behalf, as I am receiving a error flag indicating that I am not allowed to access the server... Here is my post.

TBD and TBD (the latter being a anti depressant) I enquired about a prescription and he said he was not in possession of one but had Money, I indicated that it was impossible for me to help him with his request, he then enquired about the availability of TBD!!! I said no G D way as it is a schedule 7 drug in SA.

We all decided to call it a night, and myself and Ryno realized that Jason could not walk..... We carried him to bed.

2 days went by (periodically checking in on him in his room) without Jason surfacing, we did send meals to his room as well but it was not touched.

4th day Jason arrived at around 7am we hunted the morning and he took an incredible Eland.

By Lunch time Jason had only had 3 beers but roughly 5 hand fulls of pills.

Jason could not walk and again I carried him to his room.... That evening he pitched for dinner completely out of it, so?........I carried him to his room.

The following morning at 6:30 it was clear that Jason had been up Piling (using these pills) all night I refused to take him hunting as he passed out while walking to his room at 7am.

By 12 mid day Jason called me to his room and insisted that our lodge lady (Maria) had stolen his Hydrocodone I refused to have this or any conversation with him, and told him to sober up.

An hour later, he shouted from his balcony... Calling my name, seeing that he was not able to walk due to his current level of intoxication I went to him, once again in a very aggressive manner he indicated as earlier....

I once again indicated that I was not going to entertain his nonsense and indicated the level of embarrassment he was causing myself, towards my other clients, who started to avoid the lodge due to his constant level of drug intoxication.

I also indicated that I felt that there was a clear lack of respect from his side towards fellow patrons (amongst other a 7 year old boy on first safari with his father and grand father) his lack of respect for my professional time as well as his lack of respect for our institution and all it's staff.

I in very direct words indicated that his safari was over and that I would arrange for his early departure (6 days earlier than scheduled)

That evening (only because I am a gentleman) I sent another meal to his room and Erick and Maria went to Jason's room to deliver a meal, as they entred Jason stumbled out of the couch that had swallowed him in.... Turned around.... Unzipped his pants and urinated on the floor next to and into the very couch he had been sitting on.

I am still waiting for him to wake up (24 hours later to get him tf off and away from our camp.

I am posting this to give other outfitters a fair warning...

As a side note this is a client booked at $425 per night, so pricing has nothing to do with it.

I apologize for the rant but OUTFITTERS BEWARE OF JASON EDENS FROM WEST VIRGINIA.

My best always

Okay, it just occurred to me what may have been the problem. Above you'll see three times where TBD occurs. TBD = To Be Determined.

This is where Jaco mentioned three different drugs the client was using/asking for. It seems there are filters on the AH website designed to prevent the spammers posting anything that contains those words. So I'll try to get around that. See the following.

First TBD = P E R C O C E T
Second TBD = X A N A X
Third TBD = M O R P H I N E

Not knowing the complete situation I hesitate to say anything other than. Removing firearms and ammo from the client seems imperative.

Not sure if I would wish an individual to be locked up in a SA jail. Also not sure I would want a person in this condition to be on an airplane with me for 16 hours headed back to the USA. Kind of hard to drop him off at 10N40W.

I wish you the wisdom of Solomon.

Be safe my friend.

Wheels I don't entirely disagree with your point and I wouldn't want to have to make this decision either. But if you now go to the first post on page 2, the situation should now be a bit more clear for those reading this thread. I don't know the laws in RSA, but my concern would be with what seems like an inordinate amount of prescription meds the client has with apparently no prescription to justify it. This is an of itself could be viewed suspiciously and perhaps as illegal. With the client on Jaco's place, in addition to a number of other clients and I were Jaco, I'd be doing whatever I can to get in front of this train wreck and get the guy off my place.

I may be thinking a bit as an American here and our sue happy society. But for the safety of everyone including the problem client and for liability concerns, keep this man from access to weapons and get him out of there ASAP. Calling in the police I would think to handle this situation to be prudent. This may in fact require some working with the American embassy.

I don't want to condemn the client without knowing all of the details, but this situation is beyond what I think Jaco and Reinhard should be expected to handle. These kinds of situations are where our gov't authorities should be stepping in.

Completely with you Phil. Scary stuff and a nightmare situation.... Very possible that the guy even really believes that the staff has been stealing his drugs. Addiction = insanity.

I would second Philip's suggestion of calling the US embassy, in conjunction with SA authorities. Notwithstanding the clients problems and crazy behaviour, he needs help. Without it this has nightmare written all over it. I don't want to say CYA, but it would be the prudent course of action. Best of luck.

Jason hunts is done almost before the begining for sure.....I had seen a couple of similar cases in the las tenn years.....I remember one case with Oxicodone and those medications are really serius thing.....the dependence and addiction is very high and mixed with alcohol is worst.......I guess that Jaco and the others profesionals knows how to handle this sad situations.....as everybody saids......guns away from him.....notify the police, get a doctor to try to get the person stable and safe to be evacuated as soon it is possible........Phil saids, it is not money trouble wich is real......it is a healt problem......I am sorry for Jaco and his staff and James for his problem and I really hope that this issue goes better.......!!!!!

No guns, Notify police, get a Doctor to get him back stable to avoid futures problems......I hope the beast results for this sad situation.

You must be commended on the restraint you showed, sorry you got stuck with such a POS sorry excuse of a US Citizen not going to call him a American......................

After reading the rest of the story I agree. I would have no problem getting the police involved. The client is obviously way out of control. Especially with other clients still there.

Giving the client the choice of:

1.I'm calling the police to take you away along with your drugs. or

2.I'm dropping you off inside the US Embassy in Pretoria along with your drugs and weapons. Which will be turned over to the embassy. If the embassy doesn't accept the weapons I am turning them into the police. (Not sure what liability in SA Jaco/Kwalata would have since they have given a "welcome letter" to the client regarding the firearms.)

Not sure what condition the client is in to even make this decision.

I agree with your statement "but this situation is beyond what I think Jaco and Reinhard should be expected to handle. These kinds of situations are where our gov't authorities should be stepping in."

Whatever Jaco and Reinhard decide will be the correct decision for them. That is plenty good for me.

Stay safe guys.

In visiting with an outfitter this week I became aware of a situation where they were stiffed by a hunter.

Should there be a thread on AH whether public or private where outfitters/PH's can turn in the names of deadbeat hunters so they aren't able to keep recycling through to burn another outfitter?

Perhaps there is something like that out there and I'm just oblivious.

All the best.

How very sad for everyone, Jaco, hang in there, I know you have the ability to handle this.

Wow, what a miserable situation. Sounds like Jaco is handling this with honor and decency and a lot of restraint. I'm certain many would not. My best to Jaco and his staff. I hope this gets resolved quickly and they can get past it and back to a state of normalcy. Hang in there buddy.

He must have a hell of a lot of prescription meds with him to be taking handful after handful. My question is how did he even get that amount of drugs on the plane with him? Hard to believe there were no red flags with that amount.

Kind of like an "Angie's List " for hunters and outfitters?

No room in camp for drug abuse. I dont know how many hunting contracts I have read here in the US that clearly states that if you abuse/use any drugs to the extreme your hunt is null/void.
Jaco, I commend you and hope you can send him on his way sooner then later as I believe you have done far more for him then I ever would have.

interesting forum posting.

i also have had issues trying to post reply's to this forum posting. pop up letting me know that i am not logged on.

from travel i have seen people leave with lots of medication, i always travel with my prescription documents supporting what i have with me.

i have seen (3 times) in Tanzania, Zimbabwe and the Seattle airport where passengers were being questioned about drugs in their checked bags. The bags were nothing but drugs when the bags were laying open.

As for drug addiction, no one plans to be come an addict. However what the person does will go a long way in how they recover.

From working with people who had developed a drug issue in the past, most , smoked, drank alcohol and were trying to fit in. Sometimes the person has to fall before they recover.

i also was wondering how this individual will be able to make it through the airport and a fly back to the USA.

clearly authorities should be notified, however i am not sure what one should do.

I agree any drug abusers hunt contract should be null and void, no refund. The drugs he is abusing are commonly abused. If he does have a pain problem he needs something but I guarantee it won't be much.

A place to list deadbeat hunters hunters would be good. Over the summer when I was plains game hunting the PH told us about a hunter that stiffed them. They kept trying to bill him and he just ignored them, he got all his trophies etc. So through the grape vine they heard he was returning to Africa for another hunt with a different outfitter, they had notified SA govt about the bill. So when he tried to go through customs they arrested him and he paid on the spot.

Should gave put this guy in the back of the truck and dropped him on the curb at OR Tambo!

I certainly have a huge amount of respect for Jaco and his organization. Not an easy situation but it sounds like it is being handled in a very measured and professional way.

Until this unfortunate person seeks the help he needs the only priority is the safety of everyone trapped in his orbit!

I would contact US embassy, I definitely wouldn't get the SA police involved, unless you personally know an officer who can deal with this type of situation. Goodluck Jaco.
