The figures from previous pandemics and the world population at those times makes interesting reading....yes its tragic but the world wasn't shut down in previous pandemics...check the articles by experts that are coming out now about the deaths that are going to be caused because of covid 19 not by it....those numbers are a lot higher than covid deaths in the countries discussed....i put one on here ....who knows what will play out...but to screw up the worlds economy and lives of the majority of the world population...is the end result worth that....

We had a column in Canada's "national" newspaper recently where the writer argued that she should have the right to drive blindfolded. Her intent was to show that those who argued they didn't need to wear masks were equally stupid.

I had the same reaction you did. But I've heard many people mention the op-ed approvingly. I think comparisons like this appeal to those who would rather not spend any time thinking. Those people are likely to also be those who are happy to be told what to do - after all, if I don't like to think for myself, I'm happy to let someone else do it for me.

When I was a young man and I read or heard about some government decision which I thought was idiotic, I told myself that I likely didn't have all the facts, because, I assumed, government - especially at the highest levels - was made up of bright people who made thoughtful decisions in an intelligent way. So if I couldn't see the logic in a decision, it was likely on me. I have since spent a lifetime working (on the industry side) with government at all levels - municipal, provincial and especially federal - and I now know that I was completely wrong in my youthful naïveté. Decisions which appear to be stupid are almost certainly stupid, and those which might possibly be stupid are more likely than not to be stupid as well. The people making these decisions have, as a rule, nothing more in their favour than the certainty that they know best and that everyone should listen to them.

This is not to say that there aren't some very bright people in government, although they would certainly be a substantial minority in my experience (if you work for government and you are reading this, please assume you are in that minority!). It's that there's something about being in government which gives rise to an unreasonable and unfounded degree of certainty in the correctness of all decisions, notwithstanding that very few who work in government for long periods retain any sense of life in the "real" world, if they ever understood it.

So driving blindfolded or sticking forks (I was a precocious child - I used a knife - it didn't seem to me that fork would fit) into light sockets? All part of jejune attempts at what passes for argument these days. We need to get used to it.

So this morning I was bored and needed a house cleaning break and nothing but old movies, infomercials, and news, I dont have cable or satellite.

Anyways I dropped my standards and watched/listened to ABC news. Then I really took the time to watch the news when it started repeating everything for a third time and made notes as to the covid numbers to insure I heard correcting, and I did.

"......current active cases in the US stands at 3,941,700 active cases, 142,700 have died, that's 1 in 4 of the world's population has died due to the Coronavirus..."

According to Google search the world's population is 7,800,000,000.

Please correct me if I wrong, but 1 in 4 would mean one fourth of the world's population would equate to 1,950,000,000.

142,700 x 4= 570,800
3,941,700 ÷ 4= 985,425

Seriously, Please any of you mathematical wizards tell me how any of these figures equate to one fourth of the world's population has now died from the Coronavirus.

My only conclusion is that mainstream media's math experts need to relearn real math, unlearn mainstrean media and government, ie Department of Veterans Affairs, math.

On another note from "the experts", (with sarcasm) timing is everything, a vaccine could be available by December,(...hmm), even with a vaccine the Coronavirus will never be eradicated. (...hmmm)

Vaccine available after the November elections??.
Not eradicated??. Sounds a bit like Zika, H1N1, polo, measles, flu, common cold, and a lot of other diseases??.

They actually had us wearing those on a job site. Not only would they vibrate to let the wear know they were too close, but would also report it to General contractor. This would trigger safety staff who would come break things up. What a ROYAL PIA!!!!!

I quoted the news anchor exactly word for word. I watched and listened to her 4 times just to make sure I didn't misunderstand her numbers and what she was saying. I even wrote everything down while watching and listening to her for the fourth time.

Then I went to Google to get world, US population numbers. Did my math. Then posted to Facebook and here on AH requesting teachers and mathematicians to vary my numbers and correct me if my math was incorrect.

ALL todays news is no more than BS, here in BC just this week CTV told all viewers that the barracuda that was caught in Port Alberni is a type of "tuna", then more BS, the skate that washed ashore in Vic is a species of "stingray". Then they covered the anti mask rally and stated many times the "Covididiots" were marching. If our local BC news cannot even properly tell viewers fish specie identification and blatantly name call those who do not comply to THIER beliefs how the hell can we believe their Covid "facts" or ANYTHING else they may say. After so many months of listening I still do not know anyone who has had Covid or even anyone who know anyone who knows anyone who has had. Its a mystery disease???

The media by and large have been able to do their jobs from home during lockdowns. No loss of income. And given the political leanings of much of the mainstream media, lots of stories to cover of people objecting to government over-reaching or the imposition of blatantly illegal measures. The motives of those of us who oppose this sort of thing are never sought out, much less examined. Much easier to just slander and accuse.

And, of course, we are all in this together.
