Had quite a few fail to ejects using my Beretta A400 XPlor Unico with Winchester Super target 28g 1250 fps ammo. The gun has just been fully cleaned including the gas vent hole in the barrel before the fail to ejects. About every 10th round would stay in the chamber after firing with the next loaded shell jammed up below the bolt.

I switched to Fiocchi TT one 28g ammo that are around 1320 fps with no further issues.

The recoil using the Fiocchis was slightly more noticeable than the Winchesters.

Seems like the Winchester Super targets may not have had enough kick in them to cycle the action on my gun. Admittedly, the Xplor Unicorn is a 3 1/2' chambered gun with a single vent hole in the barrel.

Sometimes a simple fix like just changing brands of ammo can solve issues like this one.

First allow me to welcome you to AH.

When you are writing 28 g, I take it to mean 28 grams (aka 1 oz loads) and not 28 gauge. I just wanted to be clear that we are talking about a 12 bore shotgun, not a 28.

The Beretta manual for the A400 shows that they are capable of firing 70mm (2 3/4"), 24 gram (7/8 oz) loads after a sufficient break in period of shooting 32 gram (1 1/8 oz) loads. And they specifically talk about the UNICO version needing a break in.

Another thing to check is that you are properly mounting the shotgun and have a proper body position for the shogun to push into. If there is space between your shoulder and the butt of the shotgun or your body is too upright to provide resistance, it could cause a failure. This would be akin to what happens when a semi-auto pistol is "limp wristed" causing failure to eject or load fully into battery.

Make sure the shotgun fits you properly. There are shim kits available to change the drop and cast of the shotgun, along with different butt pads to change the length of pull. Having a shotgun that fits you properly will reduce felt recoil and help you shoot better. It could also improve the function of a semi-auto in that there is proper resistance for the action to work.

My father has a Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus with Kickoff chambered in 3.5" (89mm) and he uses 1 1/8 oz loads (32 gram) shells at 1200 fps for clays. I believe he shot at least 175 shells this past Saturday without a hiccup or hangup. His shoulder was not bruised, nor was his cheek.

If your shotgun fits properly and you have proper body position but continue to have problems, step up to the 32 gram shells for the next few rounds of clays and see how it goes from there. Sometimes these things need a break in period.

I use the Winchester AA sporting clays at 1300 fps in my 28 ga SBE and have not had any issues. Use them for hunting also. Might try them .

I quit using Winchester shotgun shells some ago. Whatever formula they use for the “brass” portion expands much more than any other brand I’ve found.

I do use it as a test base. If a shotgun will function with Winchester it will function with anything.

I believe the OP is not based in the US because he's using grams instead of ounces for the weight of the shot. Because of this his opening post used "28g" which could be mistaken for 28 gauge.

28 grams being the equivalent of 1 ounce of shot. For a 12 bore this is not a lot of shot and very typical for someone to use for clay shooting.

However 1 ounce of shot in a 28 bore is considered a high-brass field load that would have more than enough energy to cycle the sub-gauge action, especially at 1300 fps. Most 28 bore target loads are lighter 3/4 oz of shot (aka 21 grams).

I've not had this experience, but I've only been shooting Federal target loads for the past 15 years or so. Last time I shot AA was with my grandfather in the late 1980's. Seems their quality may have slipped some since then.
