I’m searching for an elk hunt for fall of 2025 or 2026. I’m looking for a rifle or black powder hunt for myself and a buddy.
We were thinking a cow hunt for our first elk hunt so it doesn’t break the bank.
Any recommendations or contacts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Boyd

Unless you can find a outfitter with land owner tags you'll need to put in for the draw and build some points for a few years befor you'll draw.

There are a number of outfitters here in Colorado that will have land owner tags $$$$$$$ along with New Mexico $$$$$$

I assume you are after a guided hunt, as a DIY elk hunt can be pretty challenging. That said, it can also be quite inexpensive and very rewarding. I would be happy to walk you through the steps to DIY here in Idaho, but for lengthy reasons, it would be best to go for 26. If you're after a guided hunt, you can get that in 25. Let me know if I can help you. And no, I'm not a guide and outfitter, just a fellow elk hunter......................FWB

I'm kind of in the same boat, having gotten into the game rather late; looking for an elk hunt on landowner tags...for some of us that might really be the only option, pricey as it may be.

You guys could look into hunting raspberry or afognak islands. There is a genetic deficiency that causes most bulls to snap their main beam above the Sabre point on raspberry. Not sure if that occurs on afognak. Anyway, lots of elk, no draw last I knew, but bears can be an issue.

We did a DIY elk hunt in Idaho back in October..

the system for obtaining tags is a bit on the "difficult" side.. but they're obtainable... my wife, good friend, and I all three got elk tags as well as general deer tags..

we plan on taking 2025 off from Idaho, but will probably give it another go again in 2026..

As I understand it OTC elk tags in Montana are available.. and there are parts of Colorado that still offer OTC elk tags as well.. We're giving some consideration to trying elk in Montana in 2026 if we don't go back to Idaho for one..

I've hunted Kodiak Island for Sitka, Prince William Sound for Goat and the Talkeetnas for Bear...I do love me some Alaskan adventure!

(*oh, and ridden a motorcycle to Prudhoe Bay...but who's counting that...)

WAB, what else can you share?

For Colorado all muzzle loader elk tags along with all cow tags are draw only except for landowner tags

I am actually on my way to CO will be hunting tomorrow for cow elk. They have land owner cow tags for a reasonable price. I got my bull with them in 2023.

Boyd, I’d contact Wade Derby at Crosshair Consulting. Search for Crosshair Consulting on Facebook and his contact info is there. I’ve used Wade, good guy and has never steered me wrong. If you spend some time searching online, you should find some options in Utah and New Mexico too.

Oregon has an antlerless damage otc elk tag, but you have to find a place to hunt first, all private land. The LaGrande ODFW field office may know of a place or two one could call to see about access. About 1/3 of Oregon has general elk rifle seasons, but it is tough hunting, very low success unless guided. Taylor Thorp and Jody Smith are two good Oregon guides in the SW area with OTC tags last I checked.

Give Frank Miles or Ray Jackson at Horseshoe Creek Outfitters a call or email. They are usually at DSC and the Houston show too. I have a hunting report on here from a few years ago.

Google raspberry island elk hunt. Lots of info and a local outfitter pops up. I’ve got a number of buddies who have done it but it was DIY with their own planes.
