I’m searching for an elk hunt for fall of 2025 or 2026. I’m looking for a rifle or black powder hunt for myself and a buddy.
We were thinking a cow hunt for our first elk hunt so it doesn’t break the bank.
Any recommendations or contacts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Boyd

Unless you can find a outfitter with land owner tags you'll need to put in for the draw and build some points for a few years befor you'll draw.

There are a number of outfitters here in Colorado that will have land owner tags $$$$$$$ along with New Mexico $$$$$$

I assume you are after a guided hunt, as a DIY elk hunt can be pretty challenging. That said, it can also be quite inexpensive and very rewarding. I would be happy to walk you through the steps to DIY here in Idaho, but for lengthy reasons, it would be best to go for 26. If you're after a guided hunt, you can get that in 25. Let me know if I can help you. And no, I'm not a guide and outfitter, just a fellow elk hunter......................FWB

I'm kind of in the same boat, having gotten into the game rather late; looking for an elk hunt on landowner tags...for some of us that might really be the only option, pricey as it may be.

You guys could look into hunting raspberry or afognak islands. There is a genetic deficiency that causes most bulls to snap their main beam above the Sabre point on raspberry. Not sure if that occurs on afognak. Anyway, lots of elk, no draw last I knew, but bears can be an issue.

We did a DIY elk hunt in Idaho back in October..

the system for obtaining tags is a bit on the "difficult" side.. but they're obtainable... my wife, good friend, and I all three got elk tags as well as general deer tags..

we plan on taking 2025 off from Idaho, but will probably give it another go again in 2026..

As I understand it OTC elk tags in Montana are available.. and there are parts of Colorado that still offer OTC elk tags as well.. We're giving some consideration to trying elk in Montana in 2026 if we don't go back to Idaho for one..

I've hunted Kodiak Island for Sitka, Prince William Sound for Goat and the Talkeetnas for Bear...I do love me some Alaskan adventure!

(*oh, and ridden a motorcycle to Prudhoe Bay...but who's counting that...)

WAB, what else can you share?

For Colorado all muzzle loader elk tags along with all cow tags are draw only except for landowner tags

I am actually on my way to CO will be hunting tomorrow for cow elk. They have land owner cow tags for a reasonable price. I got my bull with them in 2023.

Boyd, I’d contact Wade Derby at Crosshair Consulting. Search for Crosshair Consulting on Facebook and his contact info is there. I’ve used Wade, good guy and has never steered me wrong. If you spend some time searching online, you should find some options in Utah and New Mexico too.

Oregon has an antlerless damage otc elk tag, but you have to find a place to hunt first, all private land. The LaGrande ODFW field office may know of a place or two one could call to see about access. About 1/3 of Oregon has general elk rifle seasons, but it is tough hunting, very low success unless guided. Taylor Thorp and Jody Smith are two good Oregon guides in the SW area with OTC tags last I checked.

Give Frank Miles or Ray Jackson at Horseshoe Creek Outfitters a call or email. They are usually at DSC and the Houston show too. I have a hunting report on here from a few years ago.

Google raspberry island elk hunt. Lots of info and a local outfitter pops up. I’ve got a number of buddies who have done it but it was DIY with their own planes.

I was hoping for a more budget oriented hunt. If I’m spending $15,000.00, on a hunt, I would probably go back to Africa first.
I'm not entirely sure what the total cost of the hunt would be...having said that, I'm pretty much aligned with you. For $15k I'm in Africa trying to find the right Buff!

As I only did PG hunting the first time, I would think a nice buff could be had for $15,000.00, plus a couple fill in creatures for the display room.

But it is as I have said before, it is very difficult to find a rocky mountain elk in South Africa that you can hunt.

Likewise it is difficult to find a number of animals from South Africa that you can hunt here in the US without spending the price of a South African hunt for a number of animals.

Elk hunt prices going way up like everything else. Glad I booked an elk hunt last year…for 2027.

I opted to email the folks at Kodiak Raspberry Island Lodge and they were kind enough to give me permission to repost their email.

They also attached a pretty amazing article on hunting out there that I've attached. That article is worth a read regardless - a lot of good info in there across its 14 Pages (!).

The gist of this hunt is that it's generally unguided and it is required that one hunts with a partner. The basic cost for the Lodge is $4100 for 7 days.

They seem to have really worked out the shipping for meat as well.

I'll be the first to say there's nothing easy about this hunt but darned if it doesn't sound like a proper DIY style adventure!

Good morning Robert, my pleasure, thank YOU.

Sounds good, not a problem at all. Great idea!

Thanks again and keep us posted as you move forward. Sincerely, Birch

Birch, thank you for the truly superb reply. This is super intriguing to me.

I don’t want to overstep, but I’d sure like to post this info up on the hunting website I linked to you. Given the nature of this hunt, I’m trying to find a hunting partner. The good news about this being an African Hunting Forum is that no-one is seemingly lacking for a 375 H&H…

Please let me know your thoughts.

Best, Robert

Good morning Robert, thank you for your interest in us! Yep, don’t forget to put in for the permit this November, and good luck! It is a truly enjoyable hunt.

Unfortunately we don’t have a guide available at that time; I’m not a guide, so we usually work with a registered big game guide to come in and do the guiding, but the few we know and trust are usually guiding moose hunters at that time of year. Hunting elk is similar to hunting other parts of Kodiak, and the animals are a joy to pursue. Perhaps I’ll meet a new guide or you’ll find a hunting partner before the coming season.. so I’ll move forward for now.

Alaska Air flies into TN so may be able to ship your frozen meat and trophy home; I’d start with them; we use them to ship elsewhere and it’s pretty easy.

I’ll post our write up below, in a addition to an article on how I like to hunt this country. Most important step is pulling the permit! Easy peasy after that. Thanks again! Birch

Our remote lodge is located at Iron Creek, on remote Raspberry Island, within the Kodiak Island Archipelago. We are in the middle of the Raspberry Island and South West Afognak Roosevelt Elk Herds and the Raspberry/SW Afognak Kodiak Brown Bear hunt area, all of which is home to the Sitka Black-Tailed deer. We have been hosting hunters to this area since 1985.

Kodiak and the surrounding islands are known for the weather we may get in the fall during hunting season, as well as the potential bear problems that can happen in the dark. Our comfortable main lodge, guest cabins, and transport boats are positioned to ensure your comfort and safety during the non hunting portion of your hunt.

Our private guest cabins are heated with private bathrooms and showers, we have a hot tub and sauna for tired muscles, and our meals are freshly made from scratch each day, featuring the carbohydrates, protein and nutrition your body will need the following day. We have multiple laundry facilities on our property as well as boot dryers in each cabin to ensure your gear is dry and ready to go the following day. Though one of our favorite and most productive hunts is the bowl here behind the lodge, we access all of Raspberry Strait from one of our 39’ hydrofoil assist catamarans, traveling to remote beach heads in just a few minutes from within a heated cabin at first light. This is wonderful, challenging country to hunt and home to rewarding animals to pursue. We’d like you to be able to focus on just that; the hunting portion of your hunt, and let us take care of the rest.

We specialize in unguided, daily drop off hunts with full lodge support. We encourage you to communicate with us directly about peak times of the year for specific styles of hunting, (alpine, rut, etc for deer) or which elk season to apply for (big bull, cow, etc), though we typically recommend hunt DE 702 or DE 704 (Bull, Raspberry), DE 706 (Cow, Raspberry, Nonresident Only*) and DE 713 (Cow, SW Afognak). We only offer fall bear hunts, DB 263 for Alaskan residents; please note we do not offer spring bear hunts.
*In 2024 ADFG offered a Cow Elk Registration hunt on Raspberry Island for the first time in decades. It was a bit of a flop and they only ended up issuing 25 permits that were allocated in under a minute after the registration option opened, online. Given the newness of this program, please overview the 2025 regs for an application time; in 2024 it was 8:00am September 25, but 2025 information hasn’t been released at the time of this writing.

Our Packages Include:

Fresh towels, soap, shampoo, and hair dryers are included in each cabin.
  • Couples always enjoy their own, private cabin, unless you request otherwise, and we NEVER mix groups that don’t know each other into the same guest cabin.

You may donate the meat to the lodge, you may ship it to a local butcher in Anchorage (Indian Valley Meats), you can freeze it on the bone and we can box it for your transport home, or you may utilize our vacuum sealer and equipment to butcher it yourself, freeze it here, and we will box it for your transport home.
  • About ½ of the area we hunt is privately owned by the Afognak Native Corporation. If you would like to hunt on their property please purchase a Land Use Permit prior to arriving to the lodge. https://landspermit.afognak.com/
  • A guide to accompany you into the field.
  • Trip insurance, we recommend visiting http://www.insuremytrip.com/
  • * Our small kitchen, culinary team, and our remote location prevent us from straying too far from our pre-planned daily menu. Please let us know of any dietary restrictions BEFORE confirming your reservation to ensure we are able to properly accommodate each member of your group.

A seven day, six night trip to Kodiak Raspberry Island Remote Lodge, including all of the above, with an arrival in the mid afternoon and departure in the mid morning, is $4,102.00 per person. For safety reasons, we always ask that you hunt with a companion on an unguided hunt.

Upon receiving a commitment from you by e mail we will enter your reservation into our calendars and forward our deposit request and contract/hold harmless agreement for you to please review, sign, scan, and return to us by e mail. Please also include a list of guest names in your group, and e mail addresses that you would like us to submit an invoice and payment request to. Thank you in advance for this.

For reservations made a calendar year or more prior to your trip, we request a $500 per person deposit to secure your dates. You may change these dates, based on our availability, up to January 15 of the year you would like to visit. At that time we request a second deposit to equal, in combination with the initial $500 per person deposit, fifty percent of your total trip. The remaining fifty percent is due sixty days before your arrival.

For reservations made during the calendar year of your trip, a fifty percent deposit is due upon booking, with the final fifty percent deposit due sixty days prior to your arrival.

Please read and understand our Cancellation Policy.

We invite you to join us in the near future. Please know that each of our packages are customizable, this is YOUR trip, so please let us know how we can adjust activities to fit your best interests. Please do not hesitate to contact us by e mail vacation@raspberryisland.com. We look forward to hearing from you and being part of your vacation.
Thanks again,

I've hunted two Elephant with CMS.
In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
