Good Gun Deals This Week

So we should share good deals, and even auctions, just not ones that members of the forum might want because someone might already want them?
It’s probably considered “poor form” to share information about a gun on an online gun auction for the reasons Mtn Infantry stated. Other online gun forums I’m a member of prohibit it. However, I think any gun listed for sale at a fixed price and not an auction is fair game for anyone. I’ve won a few bids on some rare and desirable guns that for whatever reason went unnoticed ( the rare exception not the rule) on a popular online auction and I dang sure didn’t want it advertised!

I tend to post good gun deals if there is a buy-it-now on GB just as there always is on GI. I can’t really define to the group if its a “Good deal” when its an auction with lots of time remaining. $10,000 guns might be at a high bid of $200 an hour from auction close. Usually, Murphy’s law says those will fetch a price of $10,001 in the end.
Exactly and as you know the “buy it now” guns at a fair price don’t typically last long or get down to 1 day left.

You know better than most some guns are alternative assets and a limited market drives demand & price.

This is exactly what I was trying to say, but you said it much better.

Complete guns (with a stock) that don’t have rust and pitting have recently sold for a few hundred dollars more than the one you posted. A stock is going to cost you at least the difference between that barreled action and the complete rifle, but then you’ve still got a gun with rust and pitting that you’re going to pay a smith to rechamber to 458 Lott and have to keep fighting the rust/pitting on the bottom.

You do you and keep posting what you think are good deals

I copied the link in good faith for the benefit of the forum. I don’t know the seller and I don’t know you—from what I can tell this thread is a spot for members of the forum to find opportunities to buy a piece.

If you don’t want to buy the thing don’t buy it. If you want to be the “good deal” sheriff I’m sure the admins will cede you the opportunity to moderate.

If no auctions is a rule I’ll adhere to it and offer a mea culpa to all but I haven’t seen that anywhere in guidelines for the thread and the forum.

Certainly appreciate your intent. Sharing anything for sale is great. Sharing an auction item that someone could potentially win with a nominal bid not so much. Just share items listed for sale or have a buy now or set price but no on auction items. All will be right with the world then.

It’s not a written rule on AH as far as I’m aware (except dealers advertising that aren’t sponsors). I think it was more of an unwritten rule that most members acknowledged. I wasn’t trying to specifically target you with regard to the auction post, an I’m sorry it seemed like I was. I appreciate what you were trying to do.

I essentially posted two comments in one.
1) Trying to highlight some flaws with that gun which made it a bit so good deal IMO.
2) I was trying to point to the masses about how posting auctions, often has the inverse effect making them not a very good deal. If a member is looking for a gun or caliber, they’re finding the auctions and deals.

There’s been a marked shift in the dynamic of AH which has included a huge uptick in posts about auctions on certain resale sites as well as auction hunts. Everyone wants a good deal (I’ve bought both guns at auctions and hunts) but sometimes we get blinded by something and miss the rest of the costs which don’t always make it the best deal.

That barreled action for $400-500 good deal all day. That price, I’ve got a hard time biting off on it or recommending it to a forum member.

Belgian made Browning .458 Win Mag barreled action. Great starter for a project. I’m sure a reasonably skilled ‘smith could bore it out to .458 Lott pretty easily.

I’ve posted a number of international auction recaps on this thread, identifying where demand and pricing is rising or falling for a variety of guns.

Not actionable information since the auctions have passed.

What say the members, useful or not useful to get recaps of what’s happening in London and elsewhere?

Of course the information is helpful! Please continue to post with your assessments.

Concering posting of ongoing auctions being helpful or hurtful to our members, I have lived both sides of this...

A. I've watched mis-identified items on auctions ready to buy at half or less of the actual value. Finding those auction items takes work. Then, some well meaning person post that same auction on firearms website. The price then increases well beyond what I was willing to pay! Good for the seller, okay for the buyer, bad for a bottom feeder like I was trying to be.

B. I have been happily saving my money by avoiding gun acutions when the same type of do-gooder posts auctions for darn good deals. I admit that I've bought a few of those.

Overall I think it would be great if no one posted ongoing auctions. That will never happen across all firearms websites so we all must learn to live with it. Sometimes we get lucky, sometimes we don't!

. . . 1.) There were tremendous values to be found on like-new British boxlock ejector 12 bores. If they had anything "wrong" with them as to desirability of their specifications, they went really really cheap. Examples of "defects" that created bargains: Short 25-26" barrels (perfect for quail and grouse). Mid-century or newer (some guns were like brand new), 12 bore (but 2.75" chambers for modern shells). At any rate, I thought the 12 bore boxlocks all went way under value. . .
Well the problem is that RST is not making Paper/Paper in 2 or 2/12 or 2 3/4 anymore. Federal is making a Plastic/Paper in 2 3/4, but not 2 or 2 1/2.

Having been dabbling in auctions for the last 30 years . I notice the same gun comes around again - esp in UK and Europe - when the buyer who is American discovers the cost of shipping the gun back to the USA - Its not cheap !

I for one think your market analyses are extremely informative and valuable, and have welcomed every chance I've had to read them. I do hope thar you continue to post them, and thank you for your willingness to share.

I appreciate this as well. I am somewhat a rookie on the international auctions, but some of the trends are quite interesting. As you noted previously, the 12 gauges can be a steal compared to 20s etc. Europeans seem more discriminating on barrel length as well. The valuation range for double rifles is generally MUCH lower than price realized when the hammer falls, but it is entertaining to watch/bid.

I see no reason to restrict postings for what is perceived a good deal. Each member has to make their own decision as to the value.
If you’re watching an auction and don’t want to inform anyone else about it then you shouldn’t.
As members we are all trying to help each other find nice rifles.

To add to this, I think there’s a golden rule on here to not snipe guns from other members. So if there’s an auction gun you’re interested in, and you post it here for a sanity check, members generally will leave it be.

The problem with that is the naive bidder. I’ve had people come to me saying “I’m bidding on this, it’s at $100”. I may have a bid strategy involved myself already, or someone else I know does already. You can’t claim turf on an auction by claiming interest with a lowball bid.

If it’s an internet auction, I find the best strategy is to get real. If I can get a deal on a gun (20% under value) that’s great by my standard. I immediately bid big, get rid of the tire kicker interest, hope I chilled the auction. Does that work? About 1:3 it does. The longer an item is listed with joke bids at 5% of value, the more emotional investment 20 other bidders have with the item. Getting the bid into the realm of reality as fast as possible is how I get a shot at nice guns that are good deals.

Many people are looking for home runs (5% of FMV purchases). I don’t waste my time with those approaches. You win if you get on base a lot, not for hitting a home run once a decade.

But anyway, I don’t believe there is such a thing as a good deal in an ongoing auction, nothing is really until the hammer is struck. Talking about low current price with 24 hours remaining is just wishful hoping.

So true - with the internet even a local small town auction is accessible - I get it with Icelanders ( Where I live) bought this in xxxx country can you bring it home - Yep - how much - then reality comes crashing in ! Maybe not the bargain you expected ! But is what it is.

I’ve never posted a deal here but I didn’t know there was an unwritten rule not to post auction guns. Seems like a conflict of interest to me. I thought this thread was about alerting other members to good deals, auction or not.
