Handgun for wolf protection

I carry similar medicine. Top mag carrier is my normal daily carry. Bottom mag carrier is my “aw crap, I have to go to Milwaukee today” rig.

S&W 329 PD light enough that you always carry it. With 240 pc coated version of Elmers flat meplat lead bullet

I have a commercial trapline in Alaska. I've had multiple occurrences where a wolf on a long drag was unapproachable for a dispatch pole. I can tell you that rimfires (17s/22s) are insufficient, as we've rarely had a single round put one down, even when placed correctly. They do not have thick hides comparatively, but they are exceedingly tough. This is while having the luxury of having them pinned down close, and plenty of time for them to expire. The last time this happened was yesterday, and I still had a "dead one" give me a thrill 30 minutes later. I've had enough, I'm going to buy a 327 and load it with 32s. Even then, I'll still never walk away without a spare locked snare around its neck.

A Glock 17 is about as good as you can get for personal defense. It’s good for 2-legged Predators as well as most 4-legged (as unlikely as a 4-legged attack is).

Come to think of it, it's another situation where a handy shotgun might be a better answer. I recall on the old iteration of this board a lot of discussions revolved around what weapon to carry to stop a bear, and I seem to recall that a KSG with lots of slugs in its pipes, or alternating slugs and buck, was high on the list.

A good pump shotgun with loads of buck sounds like a fine wolf re-educational tool to me.

@Desaad I think shotguns are obviously plenty powerful and so is an AR rifle, or a .375 H&H etc… but neither carries as small, light, and easy as a handgun - there is a tradeoff and thats why these discussions get so many opinions on What’s Best…..power & lethality are just one part of the decision.

First thing I’d suggest is training.
After enough competent training they will be able to select their own handgun platform. It really isn’t the platform that matters it’s the willingness to use, and do, what’s necessary when the time arises.

They'll be lucky if they can even see wolves let alone getting attacked by them.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
