Hello everyone,

New member here and also a new big game hunter!

I actually live in Africa (Congo) and I am going to get into big game hunting (previous hunting experience being limited to birds).

It will be great to learn form all of your experience and be a member of this forum. I have lots of questions and being an engineer by training, I tend to enjoy the little details about everything while respecting the experience of the pragmatic rather than the theoretical.

As things stand I purchased during off season a shotgun and rifle from a fellow hunter who was leaving the country, hence I am patiently waiting for the season to start in may.

In Congo, fellow hunters essentially hunt the forest buffalo (plentiful), the odd sitatunga (quite rare) or other local antelopes (not sure about the names but also rare).

While I would have liked to get into big game hunting with smaller species, I find myself straight in the dangerous game category, I tend to listen to accomplished hunters and don't plan on hunting alone until few years experience.

Regards

:S Welcome:

Many hunt bongo.

Anyway, welcome to the forum!

I am sure we will also learn from you!
Looking forward to read your forthcoming experiences.

Ah yes the Bongo, how could I forget! It is however based up north, next to Cameroun; I am based in the south, closer to Gabon.

Welcome! Certainly glad to have you here with the rest of us!

Glad to have you on board. Could you share some details on the guns you purchased?

Yes certainly!

I purchased a CZ550 .375HH rifle in good condition and in stock form and a Russian semiauto shotgun TOZ 87.

To be honest not the easiest thing to buy here, so bought from a hunter that was leaving the country, there are no gun shops.

Everyone here keeps telling me that there is nothing "better" or at least more versatile than the 375HH (some of the more experienced hunters even use 416 rigby and 458 lott on the forest buffalo..).

Personally having never hunted with a rile before, I was worried about recoil and developing a flinch. I was more eager to obtain a 9.3x62 for many reasons : lower weight (I was surprised how heavy the CZ is, imagining carrying it for hours...), lower recoil and also a bit of preference and nostalgia for the cartridge. My shooting experience is limited to 12 gauge shotguns and shooting AK 47 when I was back in my home country; hence I am not sure how these hunting rifles compare in recoil....

But now that I have the 375HH, I plan to hunt with it for a season or two, learn to hunt and shoot properly and go from there.

+1 Great to deal with. I purchased custom rifle. No issues.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary

Booked with Harold Grinde - Gana River - they sure kill some good ones - who'd you get set up with?
