I joined the 505 Gibbs club

Congrats Jay! That’s a beaut. Looking forward to your safari report.

I wish I could load a video of me shooting to show people it’s not a cannon. It’s a gentle giant

@Daniel Cary You should get a proper gun fitting first then adjust your rifle LOP to match the fitting. Yours is definitely to short. in addition the straight style stock helps with recoil mitigation but is designed for shooting a scope. to get a good iron sight picture you have to really force cheek down onto the stock comb. On a 30/06 no problem in a 500 class rifle you get the feeling you have been in a fight after each range session. If you are planning on just irons I would look at a stock with more drop (Back to proper fitting)> the alternative would be to use a red dot as it gives you a good sight picture without the crushing your cheek into the stock. My .02 worth hope that helps.

For reference I have long arms and neck at 5'10" my rifle LOP that works best is 15 1/4-3/8's. and on a shotgun it is 15 1/2.
I thank you just as well! 14" seeming to be the standard, all of the above helps a great deal. Addl: the concept, "straighter stocks offsetting recoil" makes sense .. glad to hear.
Many thanks.

One can really get 2600 fps. out of a 505?

Yes, with the 600 and much higher with the 525 . I got the loads around 30 years ago from one of the Very Best on big bores and do mean one of the very best.

Yes but why ? They are devastating on buffalo particularly with the 600 grain soft nose pills at 2150 fps . I can only imagine the solids of similar weight would be super effective on elephant .

Added this kick ezee slip on which makes LOP 15 inches.

I am a big fan of Pachmayer slip on pads . Some older rifle stocks are a bit short and have metal or horn butt plates . I have 3 sizes of slip ons which cover all sizes of stocks . No need to mess with the original timber and they work really well .

This was the only one my local shop had in stock and it must have been sitting on the rack for some time since the price was surprisingly low ! It is the biggest one they make. I also have smaller ones for my .458 Lott and .375. (Pachmayer).

I imagine the recoil would serve as a decongestant.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
