Well my new leupold will be delivered tomorrow, I took advantage of the sale they have now and got a vx-3hd 3.5-10x40mm with the firedot reticle they call them the twilight hunter I guess. I've always wanted to try the firedot and figure with the sale and now that here in New York we can hunt 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 after sunset the fire dot would be nice. I went with the 40mm other then the 50mm being $100 more I don't think it would fit as well. The scope will be going on that pre 64 model 70 supergrade 3006 that I'm bringing back from the dead, the gun is mostly be updated for the little budget I have and think this will work well.

I had to get some new rings, went with medium talley lightweights. I'd prefer lows but the quick math I did I belive I could make the bolt handle touch the eye piece so went with mediums to be safe. Some day I'd like to put some talley qd classics but just not in the budget at the moment. A friend said he was ordering me a set of alumnia caps for my birthday on the 27th, they are on sale for $109 for the set, again I always wanted to try them.

I'll have to figure out what load to stay with since it's got the cds turret, probably just be a 165 hotcor at whatever speed shoots good.

Please share your thoughts on the firedot I'm excited to give it a try.

I have the same scope on a Howa carbon elevate and love the lightweight package , The high definition makes a big difference in this line of scopes , A great scope !!
I've been wanting one of the howa carbons, either a 6arc or a 7mm-08 both would be better lol. I would like to see a 40mm and 50mm side by side in low light but Givin the exit pupil at low power are eyes may not tell the difference.

I have a 3-15x44mm in the Firedot and the same scope with the Windplex on another rifle. The light gathering on them is superb. Search my posts on here about my time in RSA playing around stalking warthogs at dusk. I never got a chance to actually shoot anything with the firedot but my PH and I got a chance to field test it and it's pretty remarkable.

They basically will roll almost completely dark back to dusk.

I have 2 VX 6 Leopold scopes with the fire dot. I really like them. Be it hunting whitetail in low light or buffalo in the gloomy thick stuff, my eye goes straight to the dot. The batteries seem to last a good long time and I really like the feature that turns off the illumination with in activity and turns it back on automatically when the rifle is moved when I’m sitting in a deer stand. I have found the lower the light the lower I set the intensity of the fire dot.

Great scope for a 30-06. You will be happy you went with the 40mm and the illuminated reticle;)

I’ve got two scopes with the firedot now, and one with an illuminated Boone and Crockett. Really helpful on dark bodied game and even in the best of conditions grabs your eye.

On a hunting rifle, I think it’s one of the best options and fwiw, I prefer the firedot to a fully illuminated reticle.

I didn't know they had a illuminated b&c reticle, I agree the whole reticle lite up is to much.

Yes, they offered it on a VX6. They also offer illuminated mil and moa reticles which are also too busy esp. when illuminated on a hunting rifle.

I’m putting fire dots on my Blaser R8. 2-12 for the 375 and 3-15 on the 6.5 PRC. 223 is getting the VX6 I’ve already got which is being converted to a moa reticle.

I wish I could afford there 2-12 but even this vx3 was a big expense for me, I either go with the burris ff2 but there discontinued now or the freedom. If I didn't want the firedot the standard vx-3 3.5-10x10 is only 399 right now. I have a mauser m18 in 6.5prc I really want a 3-15 on there but the burris will do for now. Was going to get another 3-15 stac sightron like on my 6mmarc but the reticle is a little fine for hunting.

I didn't see the plug for when you take off the throw lever in the box so I called leupold to get one. Guy said they don't add the plug anymore but he will be sending me one free of charge. So just a heads up for anyone the vx3hd don't come with that plug any longer, not sure on the other scopes tho.

Looking over the scopes it's built very nice, it's both light but sturdy if that makes sense. Everything is tight but smooth, I didn't even realize they have a fast focus type eyepiece now that's tight with zero wiggle. Glass looks very clear, I will check it tonight how it dose in low light. I really like the firedot, it's brighter then I thought it would be. The button works very nice, I'm not sure how much to tighten the cap tho it kinda comes to a stop like a turret cap but will still do a 1/2 turn but with a bit of effort.

It’s a very nice optic, you will be very happy I think. The firedot has a good brightness range, I set it towards the bottom all of the time. It is still visible against a dark background and as the light diminishes toward twilight you don’t need as much brightness. Same thing in the morning as it gets brighter after legal hunting light. I like it bright enough to be visible and that’s it.

Don’t overtighten the caps, finger tight is all you need. I have never had one rotate on me and would hate for it to seize on you from overtightening.

If you’re not impressed with it this evening I’ll be shocked.

Keep an eye on Midway USA, every now and again they will have some factory blemished scopes on sale. I got the scope for my .338 Win. at a substantial savings.

I probably have 20 Leupold scopes with the Fire Dot. VXR's, VX3's, VX5's, and VX6's. I have them on rimfires, crossbows, muzzle loaders, hunting rifles and even a new match rifle, just because I like it so much.

Once you hunt with it, going back to solid black crosshairs just isn't an option.

That's my worry I could barely afford this one firedot lol.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
