Had a fairly wise man say to me, the absolute best use of a single litre of gasoline is to put it in a chainsaw. Nothing else will yield a similar amount of useful work compared to the alternative muscle power. No vehicle, no generator, nothing else comes to mind. A litre of gasoline can produce several cords of cut firewood.

If they do work, well, the gasoline is delivered to them by tanker trucks. They won't work either. Neither will refineries...

Your generator will last as long as your own supply of gas lasts. That's it.

Stored well (in a sealed container, under minimal humidity, with a stabilizer) it'll maybe last a year. A part filled container with air at 60% humidity? Maybe 2-6 months...

Gasoline degradation is caused by polymerization. Additional of stabilizers and isolation from oxygen reduces but does not eliminate this. You can get more than a year but only if you plan for it.

Polymerization, evaporation of lighter hydrocarbons, water absorption (especially in ethanol blends like you see at most US gas stations).

Maybe you can get longer than a year if you have a sealed container with a stabilizer, but crack it open and the clock is ticking. In practicality, 1 year or less for a jerry can you're topping off a generator with seems reasonable. In a car fuel tank, maybe 3-6 months.
 
Our 500 gallon propane tank feeds our cooktop, hot water and our house heat but only when we are not home, we have a propane generator which can quickly be attached to the propane line and a gasoline one. Neither are “whole house” but they are quickly hardwired to transfer switches, we can run one or the other and they power what we need. We heat with wood whenever we are home (which is most of the time) with jotul wood stoves, one for everyday and we fire up the second when it gets below 5 degrees. Hot water and house heat will be toast if an EMP occurs but we can still cook. We have three chain saws in excellent condition, extra 2 cycle and bar oil, many sharpened chains and 50 gallons of stabilized non ethanol gas that is rotated through our vehicles so it is always fresh. At least 10 cords of dry hardwood firewood at the end of the heating season. Not sure if an electric well inside a steel casing 150 below the surface will survive an EMP but we have a year round watercourse on our property with Class A water quality. Will have to get a hand pump for the well well with a foot valve to address that situation. Static water level is 20 feet down so thus may be a challenge. We also have a 14.4KW solar system but the micro inverters will be toast. The real problem is going to be when we are fine, fat and happy and 99.5% of the population is not. We have been shifting from reliance on external utility infrastructure support to systems that are locally controllable for decades and every time we loose power for an extended period of time, we refine our systems and add to our supplies. SHTF does not bother me or the rest of my family, except for the anticipated degradation of society, which will be ugly. Hardware cloth and metal screens can defeat an EMP but it takes reinforced concrete walls to defeat starving neighbors.

There was a time, months ago, when I thought that if he picked the right running mate I might hold my nose again. I told people in 2016 and 2020 I was actually voting for Pence. But in recent months? There is absolutely no one he could pick that would overcome the odiousness of his personality and sway me to vote for him. That ship has not only sailed, but can no longer be seen from the dock.

In Zimbabwe we had the equivalent of an EMP event from the rapid hyper inflation episode. No ATM’s, empty shelves, no fuel at the pumps. Then as now power outages were frequent. Notes came in shopping bags and were useless anyway because there was little to buy but fresh vegetables. So how did people survive? The local population, particularly the rural folks, went back to the stone age more or less, they totally left the economy. The more sophisticated city folks only survived by leaning upon South Africa and everything tumbled to utter basic simplicity. Many elderly folks died from lack of availability of their medicines. The book has yet to be fully written on this whole catastrophe.
My humble view of a EMP actual event? Go back to living as in the pre-electric age. Start all over through an equivalent industrial revolution. The rebuild would be rapid of course with the experience we have. No preparations will last long enough to see us all through the interim. Just adapt to the new reality and re-build electrical energy and then re-start it all.
 
Apparently Trump has now mocked Haley for not having her husband with her on the campaign trail. The fact that he is deployed with our military seems lost on Trump. This

For the good of the country and the world, the DNC and the RNC should form a committee, 5 members each.

They put forward nominees. Then when each agrees with the other party on their nomination. That person runs for the party.

The hard part would be finding 10 honest people that would put the country’s interests over the Party.

Somehow we need two new candidates

He really needs a portable Faraday cage that he can carry with him and place over his head to stop the EMP penetration into his brain BEFORE he says stupid things like this. He/we would be better off if he just said NOTHING in these circumstances. Remember, the MODERATE Independent voters are listening to him too.

Decisions between good and better are easy. The problem is between bad and worse, and as distasteful as ether option may be you really have to rise above personal thresholds and think sincerely about national interest. What will do the least damage? Nay, not national interests, but global, because the USA is the world leader. The world situation is hot right now, it may have been hotter in history past, but the reaction/consequence index is definitely higher now than ever before. Prevention is better than cure, and projection is hugely important towards prevention. I think out of the current bunch on either side Trump scores highest in this category. But if projection doesn’t work and you are forced into serious conflict then rapid sensible unemotional decisions are needed, and definitely Biden is worst equipped for that. So given both of the immediate choices on the bad and worse side of things my reasoned vote, if I had one, would have to be for Trump.

Based on Haley’s performance as Ambassador to the UN, I’d rate her the highest of the remaining candidates in credible projection.
 
I didn’t realise the BBC was regarded as a trusted news source again. When did this happen? Was right up there with the Washington..post? Times? New York post/times?
