I have traveled with firearms internationally exactly once.
There is substantial paperwork involved and you should try to minimize transfers if possible. Preparation is the key. Check and double check. Legislation changes regularly. Hiring a permit service is a great idea. Mine actually expedited my wife and I through immigration, which after 22 hours travelling, was a godsend. I traveled with the ammo in my checked bag until leaving Joburg, when I had to check it.
Preparation, a good permit firm, and using an experienced travel agent are keys to having a trouble travel with firearms. Good idea to keep copies of all documents in a folder in your carry-on. Worked for me.
That being said, if i go back with Hotfire (who am I kidding, I am going back), I would be comfortable renting a firearm as I have personally confirmed that he has good stuff.
