Rolex Ad - If You Hunted Big Game The World Over You'd Wear A Rolex

I have a Rolex submariner

It is blisteringly accurate twice a day

Other than that - not so much

My wife has a Rolex too - just back from a service @ $2500 and equally as accurate at keeping time !
That is unfortunate. Mine has been on and off my wrist (usually on - but we are all susceptible to occasional cheap and trashy fads ;) ) for well over twenty years. It keeps perfect time, and has never needed servicing. :E Shrug:

A lawyer opened the door of his BMW, when suddenly a car came along and hit the door, ripping it off completely.

When the police arrived at the scene, the lawyer was complaining bitterly about the damage to his precious BMW. "Officer, look what they've done to my Beeeemer!!!", he whined.

"You lawyers are so materialistic, you make me sick!!!" retorted the officer, "You're so worried about your stupid BMW, that you didn't even notice that your left arm was ripped off!!!"

"Oh my gaaad....", replied the lawyer, finally noticing the bloody left shoulder where his arm once was, "Where's my Rolex???!!!!!"

Well i put the inaccuracy of mine down to the fact that I've not had it cleaned or serviced in 30 years

However my wife's is just back from an expensive service and still looses a minute a day

i don't wear mine any more but would never part with it as they were presents to each other

HAHA...I'm in agreement with some of you above. I wear a Citizen Eco Promaster diver to bang around with everyday. I was gifted a Grand Seiko for going above and beyond the call of duty at work a few years back. I only wear that to church and if I really like the girl I'm going out to dinner with. ♥♥♥ Love the Rolex, but it would probably be wasted on me.

Rolex is fine, but it doesn't belong with Purdey.

They made their name making reasonably priced, mass produced tool watches for outdoorsy types and industry. The submariner, the explorer, the gmt, the milgauss. I appreciate those models, that aesthetic and that history. But it's not very Purdey, or even all that luxury.

On that topic, I have nothing but contempt for Rolexes modern day artificial scarcity business model and pretentious luxury positioning. Far and away the least enjoyable watch brand to interact with as a customer.

A better fit for Purdey would be Jaeger-LeCoultre, Patek, A Lange & sohne, Arnold and son, Breguet.

Good ad though.

Lange,Jlc and Purdey is owned by Richemont.
Doesn't matter.

Those are all at least partly hand made, hand finished, often custom pieces made in small volumes. Luxury goods in other words.

Rolex is the Savage, remington or beretta of the luxury watch market, yet they price them and market them as if they were something special.

Why is a Rolex basically twice the price of an Omega or a grand seiko or any other machine made mass produced watch? Marketing. Nothing more. They're not even that innovative.

It's a shame as I genuinely like a lot of their products. I even own one. I just hate the brand, what they stand for and how they do business.

i have a rolex datejust but my heart is with IWC. ive got an iwc mark xvi, and a classic pilots chronograph. any iwc people out there?

IMO the IWC Pilot's Spitfire with the green strap is the ideal adventure watch.

My early 2000's no-date sub has made many journeys around the world with me and I use it in a way that it was built for. When my son turns 18, I'll pass it along to him and hopefully he'll be able to get even more use out of it than I did. Some pieces are sentimental, whether it's a Rolex, IWC or whatever. The sub is definitely that sentimental piece for me.

I would sell my Datejust or Yachtmaster tomorrow for the right price.....and how crazy the Rolex market has become, someone probably would give me that price!

And I've been looking for an original of that Rolex big game ad for a long time with no success. If anyone knows of a copy that's available, I'd love to hear about it.

You free dive to 300m?

Wear one now and walk through JHB and you will get some action thats for sure.

Why let the truth stand in the way of a good story???

Or just BS in this instance!

I did get a stainless Submariner as my college graduation gift in 1987. For the same money, my parents paid off my brother's 1980 Buick Regal.

I still have the watch...

I've worn it almost every day since I got it in 1987, and it keeps very good, but not perfect, time.

In 2016 the spring broke (A lawyer friend of mine who has several Rolexes warned me to never have it serviced, until something breaks). I had it repaired and serviced - for about $700

In 2018, someone threw me a logging chain. I missed the catch and the crystal of the watch took the brunt of it. The "Authorized Rolex Service Center" charged me about $800 to replace the crystal, but left a greasy smudge on the face. They replaced the face at no charge, but really scratched up the back of the watch for some unknown reason.

Now my 35-year-old watch has a face that glows bright at night, but the hands quit glowing 20 years ago.

It has a lot of sentimental value, but I wouldn't think of paying $10,100.00 for a new one.

I kind of wanted to give my son one for his college graduation 2 years ago, but nice watches didn't mean anything to him, so he had to settle for a rifle!

I never wear it to third world countries.

Every petty thief in the world can recognize a real one.

Some are not afraid to use a machete to get it!

Dolce & Gabbana watches in the Ds5 Line run $15,000 to $225,000. The main difference between their $3200 sunglasses and the twelve dollar glasses from TJ Maxx is the name Dolce & Gabbana. The name alone brings value. Rolex is a good name. One can drink a Camas wine, touch a pretty woman, or hunt with a Purdey. To me, Bling is like a Jackson Pollock painting. .................FWB

This is mine - looks like the one in the add, and yours safari dave

Bought around 1994, I never used it for diving - preferring a cheaper Cassio in case of loss

Mate of mine had one from Comex

Quite a few divers failed to return them when leaving the company, only to discover that if they sent it in for a service, it was returned to the company who remained the legal owner
