@observe, I've kind of gone back through the most recent in this thread. Mostly good info, thanks for sharing! Bushcraft and survival are very interesting topics.
I don't overdo my survival kit when I go out, but do carry a few items- always. At least a couple of methods for fire come to mind along with basic shelter and of course a plan for water. I DO NOT carry a mylar space blanket. IMO, those are hypothermic death traps in cold, wet conditions. I do carry a small nylon tarp instead.
My kit is not heavy and easily fits into my hunting day pack when out and about. Kits that are too big and heavy tend to get left behind
Bic lighter, magnesium fire starter, vaseline cloth pieces in a pill bottle, a small signal mirror (learn how to use it- very easy), a compass, small nylon tarp, some paracord, small fixed blade knife in sheath, water canteen/container, some duct tape, small bottle of iodine water purification tablets and some Vitamin C tabs for helping clarify the teated water. Plan for water in quantity suitable to conditions along with some food/candy.
I constantly glance at my compass. As a side note... I'm from the Northern Hemisphere and find it takes a lot of effort to stay oriented in the Southern Hemisphere. GPS and cell phones are great, but may contribute to laziness with staying oriented. And a compass alway works.
