Yes! Excellent!. Actually I found that small, two inch square pieces of Terry cloth each holding a 1/2 inch ball of vaseline (which will fairly quickly saturate into the cloth) is a little better than the cotton balls. Store and carry in a small plastic pill bottle. Not appreciated until needing to make fire in wet conditions.

@observe, I've kind of gone back through the most recent in this thread. Mostly good info, thanks for sharing! Bushcraft and survival are very interesting topics.

I don't overdo my survival kit when I go out, but do carry a few items- always. At least a couple of methods for fire come to mind along with basic shelter and of course a plan for water. I DO NOT carry a mylar space blanket. IMO, those are hypothermic death traps in cold, wet conditions. I do carry a small nylon tarp instead.

My kit is not heavy and easily fits into my hunting day pack when out and about. Kits that are too big and heavy tend to get left behind :)

Bic lighter, magnesium fire starter, vaseline cloth pieces in a pill bottle, a small signal mirror (learn how to use it- very easy), a compass, small nylon tarp, some paracord, small fixed blade knife in sheath, water canteen/container, some duct tape, small bottle of iodine water purification tablets and some Vitamin C tabs for helping clarify the teated water. Plan for water in quantity suitable to conditions along with some food/candy.

I constantly glance at my compass. As a side note... I'm from the Northern Hemisphere and find it takes a lot of effort to stay oriented in the Southern Hemisphere. GPS and cell phones are great, but may contribute to laziness with staying oriented. And a compass alway works. :)

fourfive8,
thank you for some good info
I am not familiar with this though--
'some Vitamin C tabs for helping clarify the treated water.'
Can you give more info on this please?

Here are the common iodine tabs I carry. A couple of tablets per quart of water, dissolve and let sit for at least 15 minutes. Add a 250 or 500 mg Vitamin C tablet- amount not critical. Helps clarify and remove odd taste. I can't remember where I learned that trick but been doing it on DIY trips in remote AK for years. Use anytime water is iffy for parasites or biologic pathogens. I know filters are popular but I don't trust them. I trust these or adequate boiling.

Has anyone tried dryer lint for fire starter? How did it work?

Has anyone tried dryer lint for fire starter? How did it work?

Yes.. have used it often.. works like a charm…

Mix in a small amount of petroleum jelly and store it in a ziplock in your pack…

Even worked perfectly last year on Kodiak in the middle of a pretty solid rain…

The cloth with vaseline fire kindling is really good! Hard to believe how wet it can be in places like Kodiak/coastal Alaska. I mentioned at least two fire starting methods earlier and I just checked my small bag and forgot I also always have a waterproof tube with matches- so that makes three! The magnesium starter is also really good because of the intense drying heat it creates for wet condition are starting.
