I'm clearing out some room in the safe and wrangling funds for my first trip to Africa next year, so a few things must unfortunately go. Up first is a 1977-ish production, pre-warning, Ruger M77 tang safety model in .280 Remington. I've owned the rifle for approximately 15 years and it pretty much just lives in the safe, so it's time to move it along.

Pictures reflect condition - it shows some hunting and safe wear, but clearly hasn't been abused in its nearly 50 years of existence. I tried to show the stock blemishes as best I was able. The metal is quite clean with the exception of muzzle wear and a ding at same, however not near the bore. Factory bottom metal shows probably the worst, with some scratches and finish missing. Otherwise, the bluing is exceptionally deep and well polished, with its few markings clear and crisp. The stock appears to be professionally glass bedded and free floated, and the trigger is excellent. The original 1" rings are included with the rifle.

I have fired this rifle probably 100 times since I've owned it, and was able to get 140 grain BT and Accubond handloads to group consistently around 1 to 1.25 MOA. I can send load data with the rifle if needed but I don't think I did anything groundbreaking.

Asking $900 plus shipping/insurance to you. I can accept check, zelle, USPS money order, cash, precious metals, possibly even trades for the right thing.

I realize that I am somewhat new here, and that being a first-time seller on this forum I am subject to extra scrutiny - I get it. I am happy to discuss on the phone, show the rifle in person, or send additional photos as needed. I'm located in northern Wyoming if any locals would like to do a FTF transaction.

Now there is a rifle that you should take to Africa

That thought did occur to me while I was taking photos this afternoon. If it doesn’t sell, I will consider taking it alongside my .375.
Yeah, Nobody wants it. I think you’re stuck with it.

Like who wants a Ruger made Mauser style action with deep bluing and a walnut stock chambered in a neat plains game cartridge on an African hunting website.

A nice Kahles from that era would top it of for clarity and class.

Like all the good buys. Wrong country, Wrong currency.

Nice sturdy rife. Controlled round feed and pretty good looking wood, and it is a very underrated chambering perfectly capable of taking most any PG.

I've always said Rugers are a roll of the dice, but I can say I've had more good one than bad. I have a tang safety in 220 Swift that shoots real good. I would think the 280 will probably shoot good to. At least good enough for Antelope and Elk.

Beautiful rifle.

From Belesbok to Waterbuck, that rifle in 280 with 140 grain bullets would be hard to beat.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
