Savage 99

I recently gunbrokered a beat up Savage 99 takedown in 250-3000 (1927 vintage)

This is the first sister to my lovely #1 in 25-06 and will eventually be paired to a 257 Roberts on a Mauser 98 or Win 70 blued / walnut stock, and also a Weatherby in 257 Weatherby Mag for a 25 caliber project of mine. When all is said and done I plan to have an iconic rifle for one of each of these American quarter bores, and to take a North American sheep with each of them to complete a Grand Slam

Curious if anyone has Savage 99 love to share…accuracy tips, general photos, all is welcomed as it’s my first lever besides an original Win 1895. In my youth I went hunting in Virginia and the taste there was for Win 88s and Marlin 444s and I may have residual lever gun bug.

Can't go past a nice 25. All you need is a nice Winchester 92 in 25-20 for small game. The 25s are awesome .

I had a 1947 EG .250-3000 that would shoot 100 grain Speer Hot Core into about an inch and a half and another that would only shoot the 87 grain Speer Hot Core. The 87 grain is made the same as the 100 grain, just shorter by 13 grains, and does fine on deer. I used 4895 for velocities matching or slightly exceeding published. IMR-3031 would give 1" groups with the 87 grain using the tang sight. Great rifles!
Should you have accuracy problems, make sure the fore end is not binding against the receiver. You may have to remove a slight amount of wood and don't tighten the screw farmer tight, just snug. Another tidbit is don't put the forward rest too far out on the barrel, it will shoot better if rested under the receiver. I have found it to be more consistent when benching by holding the fore end normally and resting the back of my hand on the bag. HTH. Great rifles!.....have I said that already?

Some good tips here.

I have a 1950's EG in 250-3000. It has the slow twist rate and I've found the only 100 grain bullet short enough to stabilize is Hornady 100 gr spire point, which seems to be recently discontinued. The accuracy of this bullet is fantastic in my gun though so I've collected a lifetime supply of them. I got the best accuracy with IMR-3031, but lots of stuff in that range and a bit slower works well.

Steer clear of max loads or you may have short case life due to the action design and generous chambers on most of these 99s.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
