Scope or Red dot for double rifle

Before you go to the time and effort to install some type of Red Dot on your double ...
Are you able to remove and replace your front sight?? A Green Fiber Optic may do the trick and keep the lovely lines on your double intact . And your head on the stock where it belongs

Thanks for the input/advice. As the rifle currently has a stock for a right hand shooter and I shoot links I have already delivered the rifle to a gunsmith to have a new stock made. I have also asked him to check the original sights. Unfortunately these sights can not easily be removed from the barrel, and I do not want to fiddle too much with the original sights. It seems however that the previous owner have made the original front sight darker than it should be, so this coloration will be removed. In addition, there is a thin vertical line on the rear sight that is also rather difficult to see. This will be inlaid with a thin line of gold to make it easier to see and center on the front sight. I predominantly want to have the opportunity to have a red dot sight installed due to my eyesight getting poorer with age. The modification of the barrel to accommodate a base for the red dot sight I have in mind will not have too much impact on the lines. When my son eventually inherits the gun, he can remove the red dot and inly use the open sights, or keep the red dot if he so desire.

The batteries are supposed to last 2 years for Trijicon. That being said, all the batteries for my optics get replaced prior to the hunt, so it is not an issue. It is part of being prepared. And I do have all the tools I need to service my optics and firearm in the daypack that I take to the car along with spare batteries.
+1 Tanks. I too have Trijicon replace right before my hunt and still take replacement and small hand tool in day pack in case good old Murphy’s Law rears it’s ugly head. I have Chapuis 450-400 DR

Does the dot really stand out? I dont suppose there is such a thing as a mlcro illuminated front sight?

I also prefer a Kahles RD, it´s great on a big bore double!!!

Neither!
My Simson Suhl .405 DR has express sights(my favorite), Leupold scope in QD Tally rings mounted low so the view is through the standing leaf, and a QD Talley peep that also views through the standing leaf. All sighting views are the same and as low as possible and as fast as possible.
full

My scope does NOT interfere with reloading. Fortunately, one shot usually settles matters so a quick reload is of little value.

OK all good hunting friends on this site that have taken their valuable time to respond to my initial post. All tips have been reviewed and appreciated. In two weeks time I will get my Double Merkel .470NE back from my gunsmith. The gun fully serviced. As it was an initial RH gun (and I shoot links), I have had the cheek piece removed and the stock regulated to Zero (got too expensive and time consuming ordering and fitting a new links stock). Open sights refreshed and finally equipped with a Leica Tempus ASPH Red Dot sight in 2 MOA. Now I need your good advice and tips on how to zero the sight without spending too many shots in the best and most efficient manner. Thanks in advance. PS! Will post a picture of the gun when I have it back in my hands.

My advise would be a black dot, 12-15cm in Diameter.

You can either centre the red dot, or, hold the outer edge of the black dot against the outer edge of the red dot. If you do this at the bottom you get a fairly consistent hold. Aimpoint also have targets you can print but at 100 yds I find these wash out / are too indistinct at 100 yds.

Scrummy

Took me 4 pairs (L/R) to sight in my .500 NE at 60 meters or so. I guess I could have just used the left barrel, but wanted to make sure. This was from a regular rest, not a sled.Important thing is to have the same hold (6 o'clock in this case)

Just bought myself a double rifle in .470NE caliber. Considering installing a scope or red dot sight in addition to the open iron sights. Any recommendations on which to choose?
Both...is the right answer!

Good photography. There is a lot more there than just how he mounted his scopes. Thanks for sharing.

Positively Glows and always able to gather light and never a shadow
Have been playing with front sights in a new 505 Gibbs build, the Green Fiber Optic stands out at dusk and dawn when the sun is yet over the horizon, where a White and Brass bead disappear White and Brass will also show shadows when the sun is over head .... I am currently playing with a brass bead that I have filed the face at a 45* angle this seems to pick up more light and little or no shadows
Sorry to have taken so long in responding

The mounting base finally arrived for my newly acquired Trijicon RMR 3.5 MOA and I fitted it to the VC 375 Flanged. I located the sight as far forward as I could and as this mount is little more than a plate that saddles the rib it sits very low, requiring no head lift at all.
Yesterday I shot our big bore comp with this set up and scored a full house, first time ever. To my amazement this was a totally different aiming experience, it was as if the dot resided out there somewhere and it almost drew one to the aiming point. The rifle and I were left far behind and the red dot and the black dot on the target were all that was left. It was so easy. Is this just me, or do these things do magic for everyone?
I now can't wait to fit the Kahles to my Heym 89b, but the Docter base from Heym is taking forever to arrive at Heym.

Hay Kev

been saying this for years
ive had one on my 416RM, for about 8 years now, best thing since sliced bread. u will never look back. if you mount them correctly, as you have, its low and tight to the barrel and you shoot it as if you shooting open sights.
ps. i think it looks great on the gun doesnt detract at all from looks. definately looks better than a scope on a classic gun.

looking forward

For those with some experience mounting a red dot to a bolt action rifle, is there a big advantage to mounting it forward of the action on the rib, compared to mounting it on the front pivot mount? I’m considering doing this on my 416 Rigby.

mine is mounted on the rear most mounting on a Blaser R8, i have seen it mounted far forward, for me it doesnt really make a difference

The red dot improved my shooting from average to very good when I added it to my Heym 470. I have never gone back to the irons sights.
