"Stolen Valor" - in the hunting field/industry

Years ago, a friend of mine shot a fantastic Sable in Mozambique, while it was still in the taxidermy in SA, another "hunter"saw it and made an offer for 10.000 USD, my friend replied jokinly, let´s make it 20.000 USD, and a deal was made.

It´s one of the highest ranked Sable on Roland Ward.
I'll never understand it.
25 years ago a very good friend and hunting mentor passed. His 1000 sq ft man cave (with 12 ft walls and vaulted ceiling) was absolutely "stuffed" (pun intended) with some truly spectacular hunting trophies...4 or 5 life-size Dall's Sheep, life-size Kodiak, 2 life-size Muskoxen fighting nose to nose, life-size Bongo jungle diorama, and pretty much everything in between. When he "ran out of room" he took a 15 ft Croc...installed eye bolts in it's back, and rigged a hand crank winch at the entry to the room. It was hoisted up to the rafters, and someone wanted to see it....it cranked it down to settle on top of the pool table.

Sorry...I'm digressing, Memories are flooding the pattern.

When he died, his Daughter told me at the funeral, that Del had told her... "Before you get rid of all my "stuff" give Freddie anything and everything that he wants".

As honored as I was, and still am for that offer, I couldn't accept a thing.

My (much smaller...600 ft)) man cave is also full...but every single memory is mine....I earned them...one and all
Best

I think I may have had to pick out 1 trophy to have a tangible memory of a friend if I was ever made such an offer. Especially if I was with the friend when he took the trophy. Wouldn’t have to be the biggest in the room just a great memories!

I feel like this is almost constant in some form or another in hunting. Every hunter has met another hunter that exaggerates or lies about their success. It is so common in fishing that it is a common term "fish tales" or "Fish Stories" and hunting is no different.

Obviously there are varying degrees. But almost everyone who comments under youtube videos and social media claims they can shoot 1MOA out to at least 500-600 yards, they have all shot many record book bucks, etc etc.

I have heard stories from guides and PHs about hunters asking them to shoot an animal, or an entire safari in Africa for them, and to just not tell their buddies about it.

Wherever there is glory to be had from accomplishments, people will lie about having done it.
During my first trip to Africa, my PH and his brother told me about a doctor from the states and a buddy of his that preferred to stay in camp and drink while the two professionals went out and killed the game. I guess the clients got a nice vacation and could tell stories about how they hunted and took the animals. Left me scratching my head.

Yep. I have never had any desire to have a trophy of anything I didn't kill. I did act as a "guide" once for a friend that was terminally ill. I got him on the only buck he would ever kill. A decent 3x3 mule deer. I caped it and we took it into a taxidermist. When he passed, his wife asked.me to bring pictures of the hunting trip, and to tell the story. When I got to the funeral, there above the casket was the mounted buck. The hunt and the buck had been so important to him that he had asked his brothers to have it displayed at the funeral.

If someone offered me that buck I would take it as a memory of my friend.

The Jordan Buck. It was the world record whitetail until the Hanson buck. \\

Shot in Wisconsin about 100 years ago. I new Mr. Davis's daughter who was Mr. Jordan's hunting partner that day. They were hunting along a railroad ROW and jumped a buck and a doe. Mr Davis shot the buck and Mr Jordan shot the doe, according to her recollection. They were hunting for meat and Mr Davis said "I'll take the doe, better eating." I don't Mr Jordan cared much either since he did't see the deer for another 50 years and claimed it.

He shot it with a .25-30. Not a deer round you hear much of anymore.

I believe it was a .25-20. One of Townsend’s @Bob Nelson 35Whelen favorite cartridges.

Unless there is more evidence that this is true, it is just as likely (or even more likely) that Egus Davis was the one telling a tall tale to his daughter.

Sometimes it happens in the heat of the moment, even though there are several witnesses. I was hunting ducks from a pit blind with a good friend, Ricky, and his brother Frank. The hunt was guided and we had a very good spread of decoys. Ricky and the guide are excellent callers and they soon attracted a small flight of ducks toward our blind. When we threw open the pit, the ducks flared left and right and Frank shot one bird on the right, while I took one in the left and Ricky doubled on the right. Frank leaped from the blind, shouting “Holy Shit, I just shot my first triple.” No amount of discussion could convince him that, while we had 4 birds, only 1 was his. Not until, upon returning to the blind, he found that he could only fit one new shell into his shotgun. For the next 10 years, whenever we dropped 3 birds from one pass we would all holler “Holy shit, a Franky triple!!!!!”
My brother in law did that once

Boy is this going to ruin a lot of campfire stories and beer! Of course I got over myself years ago and no one takes me serious anyway?

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
