Upland Shotgun Recommendations

Well I got the chance to handle a beretta 686 at the local gun store a couple days ago. Made the mistake of having the wife with me though otherwise I don’t know if I could have resisted. Her sideways glance was enough for me to know I shouldn’t be buying that at that moment. I’ll probably have to go with the 686. It just felt right.

Hard to go wrong with a 686.. that’s what my wife shoots in an O/U… they are a very nice gun.. there’s a reason you see so many of them out on the trap and skeet fields..

I suggest going to a bunch of local gun shops and shouldering a variety of double barrels. My favorite which I unfortunately sold was an old Montgomery Ward branded SXS 16 gauge. Someone had put new wood on it with a straight grip, which I now prefer.

I prefer SXS to OU but that seems to be personal preference.

I currently shoot a Benelli Legacy 28 semiautomatic.
I would never tell you what shotgun to get but I love shooting a 28 gauge and it is very light.
There is a big difference between standing at a trap station or sporting clays course where you drive a buggy between stations and carrying your shotgun all day in the field. Personally I will carry mine all day and thoroughly enjoy the experience.
Benelli makes the Ulralight and Beretta makes the Xplor 400 I believe in the 28 gauge as well as 20 gauge.
You will definitely pay more for 28 shells but with 7 1/2 or 8 shot that you would use for quail and dove, they are very reasonable.
Good luck with your choice. Shoulder many different ones and get what is best for you.

i have a upland special browning o/u in 20 ga with 26" barrels that i like alot for thick cover small game hunting and just three months ago i lucked into a older beretta 303 semi in 20ga in like new condition with 28" barrel with mobil choke tubes for 500.00. i have not hunted it yet, but shot a 20-25 at 16 yard trap.

I bought two Beretta 686's and shot them for five years. Sold them for what I paid after several thousand rounds.

They are great guns. And many people do not realize the trunnions on the Berettas are replaceable to help with any wear. They will last a hell of a long time.

Be careful looking at SxS shotguns, you might come home with two. Below Grulla 210 numbered shotguns.
