Ah,those lettuce are very wary, and can be dangerous! The heads look good on the wall though.I got a bit confused there……why was someone hunting a head of lettuce with a bow??
Gumpy
HI Daisy and rest, I have not read through all of the replies, just first 3 pages. Some people added and did refer to Provincial ordinances. I will briefly try and explain the current SA law. There is a Act in SA, called the Biodiversity Act and the Minister may issue directives/norms etc. from time to time regulated certain aspects. The current Norms and Standards (attached) states the minimum required bullet weight for hunting Giraffe is 250 gr. But in a previous version, dated 2009, the norms stated a caliber min of 375H&H - however the 2009 norms were never promulgated and signed into law, although the document is being used by people who are not aware that it was a "draft - for consideration" and think when they find it, it is actually a formal law signed and accepted...Can you show me where 6mm is illegal on giraffe in South Africa. Serious question.
I guess like any research paper or anything that is in debate it depends on the information that is presented and the agenda of those preparing it.I wonder what the Venn diagram would look like between those who use the word “harvest” to describe killing an animal and those who do this type of shooting.
Well. Said except for thick skinned game which in general means Rhino and elephant and can include hippo on land and not buffaloHI Daisy and rest, I have not read through all of the replies, just first 3 pages. Other countries use the joule/power factor. South Africa currently has the weight category.
Interestingly enough (RSA specifically) if you apply the norms and standards (2011), strictly you could use a smaller caliber than a 375 on Buffalo as long as it is a 250 gr bullet - caveat - you have to check the province you are hunting in own rules - which can always be more stringent, not less than the norms; e.g., Natal I am aware has said they wish to change to min of 375 for all dangerous game incl buffalo. There is always a loophole though...
It is due to these ambiguities that the standard rule is to use a 375H&H. Also the norms and standards states when hunting thick skinned animals you should use solids and mono bullets, which is absurd for something like a buffalo where people prefer a lead core/bonded.
Bottomline and not to confuse all, hunting the giraffe with a 6mm, which will never be able to shoot a 250 gr bullet, makes it illegal...
The 338 Lapua is most definitely more gun than needed for Plains game but is very effective. I used my custom 338 Lapua on a recent trip to RSA to take two animals then used my 7 PRC for the rest of the hunt. Nice to carry a lighter rifle. For 338 bullets I do like Berger 300gr OTMs at 2700-2750fps. Down range energy with them is awesome. My plan has been to use my 338 Lapua for non dangerous game on my 2025 Africa trip. I am rethinking to my 6.5prc but haven’t decided. I will 100 percent be using my 416 Ruger on my Buffalo! But it will be supressed so I’ll catch heck for that here. Haha
Thanks IVW, yes the act defines thick skin as Ele, Buff, Rhino, Hippo and croc (note the definition). For the specific 250 gr (section 5(1)(c) requirement) it specifically excludes Thick Skinned animals but incl Buff, Giraffe and Lion. 300gr is required for all animals larger than 5(1)(c) which incl Ele, Rhino and Hippo. The mono bullet requirement (section 5(2)) refers to Thick Skinned being the mentioned (Ele, hippo, buff, croc and Rhino). Hope this clarifies it.Well. Said except for thick skinned game which in general means Rhino and elephant and can include hippo on land and not buffalo
Any idiot who advocates using a .223 on bears, elk or moose is a Mucking Foron who shouldn’t be allowed in the woods. Same goes for shooting a giraffe with a 6mm. He’s a complete f*cking idiot.I’ll wait for clarification from Daisy, but if comment the other day was correct. This was done by one of the same individuals advocating for 223 on bear, elk, and moose on a different forum. It really makes me upset to see target shooting stunts on animals because I think it shows a complete disrespect to the animals they are hunting.
If the hunter can shoot a .223 then they can shoot a .308 or .30 06 which isnt the best but is way better than a .223 for giraffe, dont give the greenies, antis more ammunition against hunters
I had a long drive today and decided to listen to two podcasts by the individuals advocating the small caliber agenda and performing this stunt. It’s not a waste of time to educate yourself on how the other side thinks, however If I had no respect for them before I have less now. The podcast prior to their FIRST African trip was incredibly arrogant and naive at the same time. They had a different tone after their first trip but it’s clear their priorities are with the shooting. A few quotes before their first trip. “If the F’er bleeds it can die.” I’ll shoot the Mother F’er behind the shoulder and drop it.” Speaking of the giraffe with 6mm. I don’t understand how these guys get followers for their agenda that’s prevalent on another forum.
Why a 416? THe 6,5 will kill it...
@Daisy you clearly posted this video to stir, and stayed on this thread to argue about it. Now you're calling names and using ad hominem attacks. How many times do I have to say it’s not my video. I’ve never harvested a giraffe. Stop being a jerk.
The animal died in a very normal time frame for animals shot. Many animals run off and die 100 yards away one minute later. You can say the hunter should have shot again having a clear shot. That’s fine. But that animal didn’t suffer longer than many of the animals everyone here harvests all the time.
