What’s your hunting bucket list

My bucket list hunt now since turning 62 this year and dealing with family and health issues, is to finish my Big 5 and Dangerous 7 in 2027. I think I have have found the perfect outfitter in Zim for a 21 day hunt to accomplish it in one trip. Leopard, Bull Elephant and Hippo plus adding a Hyena. After that it will be just to enjoy any type hunt I can find and start to relax more and enjoy life.

Next decade plans
NA: Bighorn, Dall, and big mule deer. And for some unknown reason, I’ve always really wanted to take a Shiras moose in Idaho. Bow hunting axis deer in Hawaii.
Africa: leopard in a couple months, then elephant, then Cape Buffalo. Will sneak a kudu / nyala in there as I’m able.

Such a big world with Unlimited Opportunity!!!
I want to continue African Safaris and continue to experience hunting Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard, Lion as long as I am able
“Experience/Cultural Hunts” in places like Scotland, France, Spain, Hungary etc
Argentina for the Experience and Culture
Species Hunts for things like Lord Derby Eland, Masaii Land, Sitatunga, Sable etc
Maybe Marco Polo if I’m able
Man…if Polar Bear became importable… that would be cool
Walrus maybe just to experience the Culture

I have a big year coming up with Spain and Austria, but one never stops dreaming of what could be next.

Buff with my double (2026)
-Mongolia for a gobi ibex
-A leopard anywhere
-Tanzania hunt for pretty much anything but I would like to get a few of the iconic gazelle
- a bongo
-free range lion on foot
-a moose
- water buffalo in Australia
-Sitka in Ireland

After decades of hunting in Europe and especially in Africa, I am only interested in hunting buffalo, all other game leaves me cold. However, when the subject of buffalo comes up, I am suddenly wide awake.

Well, I turned 51 in February and I’ve been very fortunate to do a lot of really cool hunts and take alot of very nice animals in my time! I am proud to say that I am a middle class, blue collar, dirt on my hands guy and I have absolutely busted my ass, scrimped and saved to make these things possible for myself. I would like to do a lot more hunting in the US but I fell in love with Africa and that love is still strong enough as to where I still would rather hunt there than here for now. If money was no object here is my list!

North America
Caribou
Big Black Bear (my first was small, taken in Maine)
Pronghorn
Mountain Lion
Brown Bear

Africa
Leopard
Lion

New Zealand
Stag
Tahr

In the tradition of true bucket list, money were no object. Well that is an entirely different thing.

Here are my top 10.

1. Marco Polo Argali
2. Polar Bear
3. Stone sheep on a full mixed bag hunt (goat, moose, caribou, black bear, wolf, grizzly bear and a big 6 point bull elk). I don't think you can hunt grizzly anymore in BC. So it would have to be without the grizzly.
4. Mountain Nyala on a full bag hunt, giant forest hog, bushbuck, and so on.
5. Lord derby Eland on a full bag safari with western buffalo
6. Bongo on a full bag safari
7. Full bag Shaker in Pakistan for all the sheep, goats and markhor and all the available deer and antelope.
8. big moose, caribou, Dall sheep and goat in the Yukon
9. Full bag 30 day lion, leopard, multiple buffalo in a wilderness area in Tanzania preferably the Selous
10. Full bag 21 days safari in Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe or Mozambique

Realistic top 10, most of which I hope to accomplish this year.
1. 10-15 kg red stag here in Germany
2. Class 3 alpine ibex in Austria
3. class 1 chamois in Slovenia
4. couple good fallow bucks in Slovenia
5. couple ok roe bucks in Slovenia
6. 3-5 ok roe bucks in Germany
7. adult male wild boar a Keiler as we call it
8. mouflon ram in Czech republic
9. hucho on a fly in Slovenia in November
10. big brown trout on the fly in Scotland in August.

2026 realistic top 10
1. Capercaillie, black grouse and hazel hen in Sweden, Norway or Finland
2. Muntjac and CWD in England
3. Namibia cull safari
4. couple good fallow bucks in Slovenia

Good Luck on the Alpine Ibex. Would love to hear about your hunt

Thanks, it is for a class 3 ibex. Which is an ibex under 4 years of age. Or for a class 2 which is a 3-6 year old billy.

It’s still an alpine ibex hunt and I know a few of us are jealous

I am super excited.

My outfitter friend shot a nanny last year. He said it was fairly anti-climactic. He lives on the Italian border, and has a big hunting area he guides on down there. The red deer, chamois and roe deer up there are far from a sure thing. Everything is managed on a sliding scale for availability (and price), you have to find animals that are supposed to be a certain age class. Or it causes problems for the lease holder with the government.

You have to hunt with a berufsjager (professional hunter) who is supposed to know the area., in the government areas they work for the government like game wardens or foresters.

Seems way more regulated in Austria than it is in Germany, what do I know though.

Realistic guided/coordinated hunts:

1) Cape buffalo in a true free-range area. Caprivi, Save Conservancy, etc.
2) Rocky Mountain elk hunt, which I would consider DIY but will probably never have enough points
3) King eider hunt in AK
4) Return PG hunt in Africa for black wildebeest, gemsbok, and other PG

Realistic DIY hunts:

1) Pronghorn in Wyo. I'm almost there with points.
2) NJ bear hunt. It's pathetic I haven't done this already. Hopefully, this year.
3) Mule deer in Wyo. Building points, but not there yet.

If I hit the lotto guided/coordinate hunts:

1) Bongo and red forest buffalo, CAR or Cameroon
2) Yukon moose hunt

Fishing I'd really have to think outside the box. NJ has gotten world class with saltwater. We have giant bluefin, pretty big yellowfin now, blue marlin, swordfish, wahoo, etc.

1) GBR or surrounding area for trophy giant trevally and black marlin.
2) A real deal deep Amazon trip in Brazil for giant peacock bass and assorted catfish

Money no object?

Elephant, elephant, elephant. I’d be more than happy to just hunt that one species for the rest of my life, provided I can do it often enough.

Other species that attract me, bongo and Lord Derby eland, bull moose, Marco Polo sheep, a bull buffalo, maybe a lion, but only if it would be a tracking hunt on a wild lion.

I’d love to get a good bushbuck too, and some other various species like a chamois.

But honestly, if I could go every year for (1-3x) three weeks just chasing multiple elephants each time, I’d be a happy man. It has everything I want in a hunt: lots of walking and tracking, very precise individual targeted (trophy or management or…), requirement to get as close as possible, very precise shooting with a required large knowledge of anatomy, use of big manly rifles/calibers in classical cartridges, an element of danger, the most amount of contribution to conservation per animal, hunting in wild open spaces.
And elephant kebabs are surprisingly good.

You don’t need a ton of points to elk hunt DIY. You can look at Idaho and getting lucky when they go on sale if you don’t put in for their Elk/Deer Lottery. If you can’t get a tag year one you should be able to get one year two/three since it’s somewhat random based on when you join the queue and how other tags sell. Since Colorado went all draw you can look at some of the very low point units. New Mexico is entirely random and you can buy a landowner voucher. Utah has some general/spike tags. You really only need to build points if your goal is a top end trophy unit. I’m a guy with 10-20 points in most every state out west and I still hunt every year or two without burning points.

You don’t even need points for pronghorn/mule deer in Wyoming unless you’re trying to hunt a specific area. There are several areas with leftover tags some years that you can access with some trespass fees. Colorado also has some archery units for speed goats.

If you’re over 20 and just now getting in the points game you’re going to be very unhappy unless you’re just looking for some short term 2-5 points units or you get super lucky and draw the random tag in states that do that
