Who all is sitting in the woods with a rifle way to big for the critter they are after

Gotta love it! I whacked a big doe last week with a 200 grain SST out of my smokeless muzzleloader, 104 yards heart shot, still ran 75 yards before piling up. Amazing how far they can go with a mortal wound.View attachment 260110
That will always amaze me the little doe I shot last year ran 130-150 yards with 2” wide by 4” high hole in center of her brisket and a piece of lung the size of a deck of cards laying on the ground at point of impact.

Mr. Leoni, Very nice buck. Please tell me about that lovely rifle with which you took the buck. Is it a high wall?

Hi, Joe,

No, it is the rifle in my avatar: a 1925 H&H built on a Webley-type action (looks like a stylized Farquharson if you squint). .375 H&H Flanged caliber, with a 6x32 Zeiss Diatal in claw mounts.

Webley Model 1902 Action?

I've handled a small frame but never a large frame.

If I remember correctly the Small Frame was in .25-35 WCF (6.5x52R).

Yes--1902 action.

Yes--1902 action.

I know the small frame I handled was one of "those" guns. The ones that are simply alive in your hands and you buy regardless of caliber (unfortunately it was a financial impossibility at the time).

If the large frame is anything like the small frame you are a very lucky man.

Thanks, 2L8--this is simply the best rifle I've ever handled, let alone owned. I am indeed lucky to have it.

Thank you Mr. Leoni. I hope you weren't offended by my thinking it may be a Hi-Wall but, the sling was covering the lever and trigger and I thought I could make out a hammer spur. My bad.:E Blush:

LOL - I am the product manager for Uberti, so high-wall rifles are my bread and butter! ;-) They are good stuff!

Wonderful glad I didn't offend!:S Cool: I like hi-walls also.

Nice to know a true enthusiast is in that position. To many companies today run by people who have no clue about the actual products and their customers and why they buy their product (Money is a consideration but in the end if the product disappoints you have lost a customer for life).

I'm sure that's not why you mentioned your position so I will get off my soap box now.

Nice Rifle! (In case I didn't directly state it earlier).

Couple of years ago my 7x64 was in the shop so I took out my 9.3x62...

Been fine for fallow, a little large for roe but the 286gr RWS T-Mantel sure made a mess of the fox that decided to mark his territory ~30yds from my highseat...

I'd much rather see an individual hunt with a rifle that's much larger than necessary which will increase his odds of killing efficiently and humanely than listening to the guy who uses a 22 caliber rifle on a deer knowing that his odds of just wounding the animal has increased exponentially. Nothing wrong with using a 416 on a deer knowing that it's going to be dead before it's head hits the ground. No such thing as overkill, but there is the unethical reality of being under gunned.

That's how I feel in Wisconsin with a 338 win mag no one even carries ammo for it near me. It was funny watching old vs new this year during rifle season. The young guys are using AR's in 6.5 and 300 blk and the old times still stand with Remington pumps and Savage 99's.

Preparing for opening day of Pa flintlock season tomorrow I know it’s not way larger than the game I’m after but in a day when.50 cal in standard I have always used .54 when a standard barrel length is 20”-24”mine is 42”when the rest of the hunters in my group use sabots I use a patched round ball.
Hopefully I will redeem myself after a dismal rifle season.
