I'm gonna guess you don't like the 500/416 NE?

I was actually referring to the more common 416 cartridges such as the 416 Rigby and the 416 RM (but i still think the 500/416 is a fine cartridge).

In almost every African situation i would take a 416 RM over a 375 H&H but that is just a personal opinion.

However, I looked at my potential cartridges projectile first with a very pessimistic eye. First I shopped .375's and found they had a good availability near me, but only in certain places. There were no .416's to be had. I found brass in the PPU empties and ammunition that could be had for a song. I found a .375 in an Encore because I became captivated by tales of the forum members. I figured it was a good way to start and if I couldn't handle the caliber, I'd be out of it easily enough.

The. 458 came in a quest for energy. Having read the Terry Wieland book Dangerous Game Rifles I just had to have a .450 3¼ NE. I rationalized this by telling myself that there are a myriad of .45-70 projectiles I can use for practice. The problem was I couldn't seem to find a .450 in my price range. I wanted a single shot, but the No. 1's were crude looking in recent production and overpriced. I wholeheartedly object to the boddington guns. I feel like the man did himself a huge disservice allowing his name to be slapped onto such a cost cutting endeavor. The fine finish is gone. The fine wood is gone. The express sights are cheap. The chamberings were novel. The conversion market was interesting with everyone feeling like their simple rechambering conversion added significant value to the gun upon resale. With the options all coming in around $2000, when I found an original Lott for much less, I jumped on it immediately. If I do anything else I think the .495 A Square will be the next stop as it is another niche filled.

I walked into a gunshop yesterday in ND. Couldn't pass up a CZ 458 Lott with the synthetic/ Kevlar stock. Rifle feels alittle on the light side but I want to shoot one so I bought it. Then I found a TC Katahdin 500 S&W on the rack and tried to make a 2 rifle deal. No deal, could be made, small local shop. The couple seemed like good honest people so I took them both. We'll see if the CZ gives me any feeding issues, my 416 R worked properly while I had it. No rifle pics available as they are holding them for me for safe keeping till I head back to WY in about a month. I sent the 375 statement to my 14 year old son and he agreed. He has 2 animals to his credit with the H&H. I Started with a 375 H&H and added 9.3×62 and 450/400 No1's. 458 Lott, 500 MDM. Would like to build 2 458 B&M's for him and I but, keep getting side tracked. John

I havent tried the synthetic CZ in 458 Lott but i have tried the normal wood rifle and was a HUGE fan of that gun! The 458's recoil is stout but the design of the stock on the CZ rifle lends itself to dealing with recoil.

I found the width of the CZ (B&C) stock butt to be well suited to big bores.
Spreading out that recoil energy over a greater area really helps.
Although mine was a mere mid-bore in 375H&H.

The Businesswoman made it out to the range yesterday. She proved to be a sultry seductress that showed off her good looks in front of my friends and leaned in for some shocking PDA in front of witnesses. I got to talk about my favorite rifle and caliber with people who are as good of shots as they are friends. When the moment of truth arrived, I delivered two cold shots from a clean rifle into a target some 85 yards distant offhand using open sights without any rests or artificial support. I fired one 500 grain practice load and one full power 500 grain load. The better shot is the full power. She has reaffirmed her clutches on my heartstrings. She did however flirt with another shooter who thoroughly enjoyed the 400 grain practice loads. We have confirmed that the sights are well regulated, but the shooter is in need of more practice.

as you can tell my friend isn't a big guy (maybe 130 pounds) but he handles that 17 pound barrel heavy monster of a rifle pretty dang well.

Hey @matt85 and gents can I join your online Big Bore club? Just got my new MRC ( was on gunbroker for months back in the winter) in a unusual Colorado Buck edition 505 Gibbs all Cerakoted with synthetic stock. The brake came with it so I had no choice. Anywho, it feeds nickel and brass like an egg on a 1in. slick of hot butter on a Teflon surfaced pan.

@Dr. Crack 505 gibbs is a fine cartridge! I really enjoyed my AHR chambered in the same cartridge, took a buffalo back in 2016 with it.

I'm in the process of organising a fun shoot for big bores down here in NZ. My thoughts on it so far are

1. 3x shots at 50yds using shooting sticks, shooting at a scored target ie 10 ring, 9 ring etc (no time limit)

2. 3x shots at 50yds freehand, shooting at a scored target (no time limit)

3. 3x shots,timed. After first shot timer starts next two to be fired in 3-4 seconds 1 at 50yds off sticks, one freehand at 40yds, one freehand at 25yds, reactive type target (balloons, pieces of wood etc)

4. 4x shots timed, shoot 2 shots at reactive target at 50yds, reload and shoot 2 more reactive targets at 50yds. Each miss is 5 seconds added to time.

Should be a bit of fun.

13 shots with the cannon. What Cal(s)?.... Yepp some shoulders gonna talk lol. Sounds Fun errr Uhh Im late here. “Sounded Fun.”

I guess, but why are these twist rates vary so much. Iv'e researched other calibers and twist rate seemed to vary depending on bullet weight, but heavy calibers don't have as many options in bullet weight, so why such a variance.
Would a bullet fired out of a 1-10 twist have better velocity and accuracy than the same bullet fired out of a 1-14 1-16 etc

any one else here find heavy recoil to be relaxing?

I had a rough start today dealing my my new computer and Windows 10 being a poor operating system. the dang computer doesn't like the programs I want to use. so when I finally got to the point where I was ready to toss the new computer off my porch, I grabbed a dozen heavy 505 Gibbs loads (600grs at 2250fps) and went off to the range. by the 4th cartridge I had already completely forgotten about my computer trouble and by the 6th cartridge I was all smiles. in the end I was glad I only brought 12 cartridges because I could have shot another dozen if I had and I need to conserve bullets.

@matt85 If you would be so kind sir I have a few reload Qs. 1. how many rounds are you getting off of each of your 505 Gibbs cases? 2. Do you anneal every 4-5 uses or so? 3. Do you use nickel too? I am a handloader and just wanted to compare notes for my benefit since you are the Maharajah of Muzzle Energy and the Regent of Recoil of the Fiefdom of Ft. lbs!

@Dr. Crack the 505 gibbs operates at pretty low pressure, even the "hot" loads are generally still fairly low pressure. be very careful annealing the brass because the shoulder is very small and if softened it will crumple. im afraid i dont remember how often i annealed the cases but it wasnt often and depended on who made the brass. i did use nickle cases but i dont like them as much as normal brass as they just dont last as long.
