The 2017 Expedition 1882 Era Black Powder Hunt At Weltevreden Farm In Limpopo South Africa

Gert so sorry to hear about that, give Wallace our best. Condolences to the family of his neighbor also...

Yes indeed. our condolences to Wallace and his neighbours family on this most tragic loss of his life.

Thank you members/Von Gruff it is much appreciated. Yes, Johan Greyling gave Wallace an ox wagon, we are going to restore /re-build this old ox wagon to the like of Wallace Vosloo so he can continue his good work by conducting 1800 era classes to young children during the hunting expos he attend usually. He is a remarkable man with an incredible and vast knowledge base in this regards.(y)(y)(y) I will upload the photos of this coming project for everybody to follow...

Hunting Gold
Thank you for the reply it is much appreciated. Please mention to your Black powder hunters if there are a need for them to participate in such a hunt for a week long on the Weltevreden Farm like we do it every year , it can be arrange if there are enough hunters willing to come and participate in such a hunt. The hunt will be done exactly as we do it every year.

If there is a need to hunt trophy game like kudu with black powder rifles /smokeless rifles after the black powder hunt they can do that as well..there will be an outfitter /PH to assist with all the regulation requirements as well.
They can pm me .

Members, here is a video regarding the history of the Ox wagon and all activities around it. Unfortunately it is in Afrikaans...but at least you can see what it looks like in real life..I am of the opinion they will do this series in English as well.

Members, if all goes well next year we will be welcoming Flatwater Bill9 member of this forum) and a Norwegian hunter to our fold . Flatwater Bill will be bringing a 1871/84 Black Powder Mauser and the Norwegian hunter a Krag Jorgenson 6.5x55 Kongsberg 1895 replica ( 1912)(y)(y)

Thank you BenKK, I am already busy with preparations for our 2018 Black powder 1883 era hunt.(y)(y)

Leslie any one is more than welcome to join in this type of hunt, keep in mind it is a re-enactment hunt so you need to have all the clothing and a black powder hunting rifle ...if there are more people interested in such a hunt I would recommend you come as a group so we can accommodate a group of hunters. We have the ox wagons/oxen to do a week long 1883 era Black Powder hunt next year .(y)(y) We have an outfitter and a PH to accommodate foreign hunters.(y)(y)

I am currently busy preparing for the 1883 Black Powder hunt this coming April/March. I completed a few knives to use on the Black powder hunt. Most of the steel used in these knives are ball bearings, saw blades and cable( two knives and a spear ) I will upload photos of them...the two top knives is from stainless steel ...

These are kitchen and slaughter/meat processing knives. I like the kitchen/meat processing category of knives. My next batch of knives will be butcher knives.(y)(y) This is a large kitchen knife I still need to polish ...the handle is of Jara wood.
akezBPe.jpg

Another knife I used indigenous wood called Tambotie..this is the prince of our indigenous wood.

Two more knives I am busy completing..all kitchen knives with indigenous wood...

Here is a knife I designed for my own purposes in the 1883 Era Black powder hunt kitchen. It has a small handle/grip and a large, broad , thin blade for filleting fish or venison. It will also be handy inside the carcass to remove/cut loose any meat alongside the bones...

Shaun, you are more than welcome to join us in the Black Powder hunt. I am currently busy putting together some ideas of what will work for making a memorable hunt for hunters abroad and members of this forum . It wil be the same format, only difference will be that we will trek with the ox wagon/oxen on a large hunting farm set up camp , hunt for two days , trek again and repeat the process...this will give hunters an idea of how life was lived in the old days...(y)(y)

Some photos of our camp food ...

Wow! This thread is magical to me! I recently read "The Covenant" by James Michener and your photos are exactly the way I imagined the Trek Boers journey in my mind...including the ox wagon. So sad to hear that your friend's wagon burned...that happened in the book as well and his friends also rebuilt him a new one with what could be salvaged from the ashes. I am currently reading "Power of the Sword" by Wilbur Smith and in this book there is also a farm named Weltevreden. I realize this book is a work of fiction, but the idea that it could be the same place makes me happy.:)

Sometimes I think that I should refrain on spending money on new hunting/fishing equipment and get myself a 1800's period correct blackpowder and some correct clothing for this! Thank you for posting the pics and keep them coming!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
